Abstract

A bioprosthetic valve for repairing a deep venous insufficiency in a subject includes a single leaflet from a xenogeneic heart valve attached at natural margins of attachment to a patch of valve wall tissue. The patch may extend axially above and below the leaflet and circumferentially on either side of the leaflet to provide a region for attaching the patch to a fenestration in a host vein. A bioprosthetic valve may be manufactured by excising a portion of a xenogeneic heart valve including a single leaflet and contiguous wall tissue, and may further comprise shaving off excess leaflet tissue from adjacent leaflets. A method of replacing a malfunctioning venous valve in a subject includes providing a bioprosthetic valve as described above and inserting it to the host vein.

Claims (9)

1. A method of manufacturing a replacement venous valve for a host vein in a subject, the method comprising: obtaining a porcine aortic xenogeneic heart valve; and excising a portion of the heart valve so as to include a leaflet selected to provide adequate obstruction of the host vein when a free edge of the selected leaflet is in an open position once the portion of the heart valve is attached to the host vein, wherein the portion of the aortic valve is maintained to include a noncoronary leaflet as the selected leaflet with natural margins of attachment and a natural sinus of the aortic valve along a wall portion of the aortic valve.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising cutting through each natural commissure of the selected leaflet and shaving off tissue of any leaflets adjacent to the selected leaflet.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is human.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the host vein is a vein in a deep venous system, a iliac vein, or other veins of comparable caliber.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the xenogeneic heart valve is subjected to a fixation treatment.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the heart valve is attached to a support frame or an attachment means.

7. A replacement venous valve device for a host vein in a subject, comprising the replacement venous valve manufactured by the method of claim 1 .

8. The replacement venous valve device of claim 7 , wherein the xenogeneic heart valve is an aortic valve.

9. The replacement venous valve device of claim 7 , wherein the selected leaflet is a noncoronary leaflet.
