Abstract

A light-emitting system is provided which is removably attachable to headgear for personal illumination to enhance visibility of the user to others. The light-emitting system includes a housing that defines a receiving aperture and is configured to surround a portion of the headgear when the light-emitting system is removably attached to the headgear for use. The light-emitting system further includes at least one lens and a plurality of lighting elements coupled to the annular housing which are configured to selectively generate a halo or at least a partial halo of light that radiates outwardly away from the annular housing through the at least one lens to provide enhanced personal illumination.

Claims (26)

1. A light emitting device, comprising:

an annular form factor sized to circumferentially surround a hardhat or other headgear when the light emitting unit is worn by a user, and including a rigid housing and an attachment mechanism that is distinct from and coupled to the rigid housing; and

a plurality of lighting elements arranged within the rigid housing to generate at least a partial halo of light surrounding the hardhat or other headgear when the light emitting device is worn and the plurality of lighting elements are illuminated, including in a region behind the light emitting device that is illuminated by the plurality of lighting elements arranged within the rigid housing, and

wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a flexible band that is located radially inward of the rigid housing and is configured to be stretched or elongated to receive the portion of the hardhat or other headgear and to thereafter apply a bias or inwardly-directed pressure to the portion of the hardhat or other headgear to retain the light emitting device in position on the portion of the hardhat or other headgear, and so as to enable attachment of the light emitting device to the hardhat or other headgear without compromising the integrity of the hardhat or other headgear.

2. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the plurality of lighting elements are uniformly spaced apart from one another.

3. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the flexible band includes an adjustment mechanism for constricting the band around the portion of the hardhat or other headgear.

4. The light emitting device of claim 3 wherein constricting the band includes adjusting a tension in the band.

5. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the flexible band spans across a receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing.

6. The light emitting device of claim 5 wherein the receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing is sized to receive the portion of the hardhat or other headgear.

7. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the flexible band is secured to anchor locations on opposing ends of the rigid housing.

8. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the flexible band attaches to an inner periphery of the rigid housing and is removable from the rigid housing.

9. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein, when the light emitting device is received on the portion of the hardhat or other headgear, the rigid housing is radially offset from the portion of the hardhat or other headgear by a gap.

10. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the rigid housing has a broken or open profile.

11. A light emitting device, comprising:

a rigid housing configured to at least substantially circumferentially surround a portion of a hardhat or other headgear;

a plurality of lighting elements supported by the rigid housing and arranged to generate at least a partial halo of light surrounding the hardhat or other headgear, including in a region behind the light emitting device that is illuminated by the plurality of lighting elements arranged within the rigid housing; and

a flexible band that is distinct from and coupled to the rigid housing, the flexible band being located radially inward of the rigid housing and configured to circumferentially surround the portion of the hardhat or other headgear and to be stretched or elongated to receive the portion of the hardhat or other headgear and to thereafter apply a bias or inwardly-directed pressure to the portion of the hardhat or other headgear to retain the light emitting device in position on the portion of the hardhat or other headgear.

12. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the plurality of lighting elements are uniformly spaced apart from one another.

13. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the flexible band includes an adjustment mechanism for constricting the band around the portion of the hardhat or other headgear.

14. The light emitting device of claim 13 wherein constricting the band includes adjusting a tension in the band.

15. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the flexible band spans across a receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing.

16. The light emitting device of claim 15 wherein the receiving aperture formed by the rigid housing is sized to receive the portion of the hardhat or other headgear.

17. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the flexible band is secured to anchor locations on opposing ends of the rigid housing.

18. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the flexible band attaches to an inner periphery of the rigid housing and is removable from the rigid housing.

19. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein, when the light emitting device is received on the portion of the hardhat or other headgear, the rigid housing is radially offset from the portion of the hardhat or other headgear by a gap.

20. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein the rigid housing has a broken or open profile.
