Abstract

Various methods and systems are provided for an x-ray imaging system. In one example, an x-ray tube of the imaging system includes a rotor with a core forming a continuous unit with at least one of a retention sleeve and a bearing assembly sleeve. The rotor further includes one or more magnets disposed in the core and maintained in place by the retention sleeve.

Claims (31)

1. An x-ray tube, comprising:

a rotor with a core formed from a non-magnetic material;

a bearing assembly coupling the core of the rotor to a target of the x-ray tube, the bearing assembly having a rotatable component, a stationary component, and at least one of a liquid metal bearing assembly and a ball bearing assembly, the core forming a continuous unit with at least one of a retention sleeve and a bearing assembly sleeve, the continuous unit reducing a number of individually fabricated components; and

one or more magnets disposed in the core and maintained in place by the retention sleeve.

2. The x-ray tube of claim 1 , wherein the core, the retention sleeve, and the bearing assembly sleeve form a single, continuous unit and are each formed of a non-magnetic material.

3. The x-ray tube of claim 2 , wherein the core, the retention sleeve, and the bearing assembly sleeve are formed as the single, continuous unit by additive manufacturing.

4. The x-ray tube of claim 1 , wherein the one or more magnets are positioned along an outer surface of the core around an entire circumference of the core and wherein the retention sleeve is configured to circumferentially surround the core at least where the one or more magnets are positioned.

5. The x-ray tube of claim 4 , wherein the one or more magnets are Halbach array magnets forming a magnetic field along one side of the one or more magnets.

6. The x-ray tube of claim 1 , wherein the core and the bearing assembly sleeve are a single, continuous unit formed by additive manufacturing.

7. The x-ray tube of claim 1 , further comprising one or more thermal barriers extending between an outer surface of the bearing assembly sleeve and an inner surface of the core, around a circumference of the bearing assembly sleeve.

8. The x-ray tube of claim 1 , further comprising one or more thermal barriers arranged adjacent to magnets in the bearing assembly sleeve.

9. A rotor for an x-ray tube, comprising:

a core arranged in a vacuum chamber of the x-ray tube and forming a continuous unit with a sleeve of a bearing assembly;

a first set of thermal barriers positioned between the core and the bearing assembly sleeve; and

a rotating target driven by the core and linked to the core by the bearing assembly, the bearing assembly including bearings enabling rotation of the sleeve about a shaft of the bearing assembly.

10. The rotor of claim 9 , wherein the core and the bearing assembly sleeve are additively manufactured to form the continuous unit.

11. The rotor of claim 10 , wherein the core and the bearing assembly sleeve are formed of a non-magnetic material and wherein the core has one or more magnets arranged around a circumference of the core.

12. The rotor of claim 11 , wherein the first set of thermal barriers positioned between the core and the bearing assembly sleeve is continuous with both the core and the bearing assembly sleeve, the first set of thermal barriers configured to block heat transfer from the target to the one or more magnets.

13. The rotor of claim 12 , further comprising a retention sleeve configured to circumferentially surround the core and retain a position of the one or more magnets and wherein the retention sleeve is formed of the non-magnetic material, the retention sleeve being continuous with the core, the first set of thermal barriers, and the bearing assembly sleeve.

14. The rotor of claim 10 , wherein the core and the bearing assembly sleeve are formed of a magnetic material, and

wherein the rotor is an induction motor squirrel-cage rotor.

15. The rotor of claim 9 , wherein the bearings are liquid bearings.

16. The rotor of claim 9 , wherein the bearings are ball bearings.

17. The rotor of claim 9 , wherein the bearing assembly sleeve includes permanent magnets and a second set of thermal barriers and wherein the second set of thermal barriers is at least one of gaps formed in the bearing assembly sleeve, positioned around the permanent magnets, and a protrusion extending perpendicularly away from an outer surface of the bearing assembly sleeve, between the permanent magnets and the target.

18. An imaging system, comprising:

an x-ray tube having a motor with a stator positioned external to a vacuum chamber;

a rotor positioned inside of the vacuum chamber and configured to drive rotation of a target of the x-ray tube, the rotor including a core with magnets and a retention sleeve; and

a bearing assembly coupling the core of the rotor to the target of the x-ray tube, the bearing assembly having a rotatable component, a stationary component, and at least one of a liquid metal bearing assembly and a ball bearing assembly;

wherein the core, the retention sleeve, and a sleeve of the bearing assembly are formed from a non-magnetic material, the core forming a continuous unit with at least one of the retention sleeve and a bearing assembly sleeve, the continuous unit reducing a number of individually fabricated components.

19. The imaging system of claim 18 , wherein a position and a speed of the rotor is known without use of a speed or position sensor.

20. The imaging system of claim 18 , wherein the bearing assembly includes a liquid metal bearing.
