Abstract

This disclosure includes several different features suitable for use in circumaural and supra-aural headphones designs. Designs that reduce the size of headphones and allow for small form-factor storage configurations are discussed. User convenience features that include synchronizing earpiece stem positions and automatically detecting the orientation of the headphones on a user's head are also discussed. Various power-saving features, design features, sensor configurations and user comfort features are also discussed.

Claims (40)

1. A listening device, comprising:

a first earpiece;

a headband having a first end coupled to the first earpiece, the first earpiece comprising:

an earpiece housing defining an interior volume;

a speaker disposed within the interior volume; and

a pivot mechanism operable to enable the earpiece housing to rotate separate from the headband about a roll axis, the pivot mechanism comprising:

an actuator defining an aperture sized and shaped to receive the first end of the headband; and

a first compression spring positioned to compress relative to the aperture while opposing rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis.

2. The listening device set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a second compression spring positioned to compress relative to the aperture while opposing rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis.

3. The listening device set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a bracket coupled to the earpiece housing and wherein the first compression spring has a first end coupled to the actuator and a second end coupled to the bracket.

4. The listening device set forth in claim 3 , wherein the first and second ends of the first compression spring are coupled to the respective actuator and bracket with respective first and second pins.

5. The listening device set forth in claim 1 , wherein the actuator comprises a bearing positioned between the actuator and the received first or second end of the headband, the bearing configured to allow rotation of the pivot mechanism around a second axis.

6. The listening device set forth in claim 5 , wherein the roll axis is a roll axis and the second axis is a yaw axis.

7. The listening device set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a mechanical stop configured to limit rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis.

8. The listening device set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pivot mechanism is positioned off-center of the first earpiece.

9. An earpiece, comprising:

an earpiece housing defining an interior volume;

a speaker disposed within the interior volume; and

a pivot mechanism disposed at a first end of the earpiece housing and operable to enable the earpiece housing to rotate about a roll axis and comprising:

an aperture sized and shaped to receive a first end of a headband;

first and second pivot rods; and

first and second compression springs positioned to compress relative to the aperture while opposing rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis, each of the first and second compression springs having a first end coupled to the first pivot rod and a second end coupled to the second pivot rod.

10. The earpiece as recited in claim 9 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a magnet and a sensor, the sensor configured to detect a change in a magnetic field of the magnet to detect rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis.

11. The earpiece as recited in claim 9 , wherein the pivot mechanism is further operable to enable the earpiece housing to rotate about a yaw axis.

12. The earpiece as recited in claim 9 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a bearing defining the aperture, the bearing positionable between the earpiece housing and the received first or second end of the headband and configured to allow rotation of the pivot mechanism around a second axis.

13. The earpiece as recited in claim 12 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a bracket coupled to the earpiece housing and wherein the first pivot rod is coupled with the bearing and the second pivot rod is coupled with the bracket.

14. The earpiece as recited in claim 9 , wherein the pivot mechanism further comprises a mechanical stop configured to limit rotation of the pivot mechanism about the roll axis.

15. Headphones, comprising:

a first earpiece comprising a first earpiece housing defining a first interior volume and a first pivot mechanism coupled to the first earpiece housing and operable to enable the first earpiece to rotate about a first roll axis, the first pivot mechanism comprising:

a first actuator defining a first aperture sized and shaped to receive a first end of a headband; and

a first compression spring positioned to compress relative to the first aperture while opposing rotation of the first pivot mechanism about the first roll axis; and

a second earpiece comprising a second earpiece housing defining a second interior volume and a second pivot mechanism coupled to the second earpiece housing and operable to enable the second earpiece to rotate about a second roll axis, the second pivot mechanism comprising:

a second actuator defining a second aperture sized and shaped to receive a second end of the headband; and

a second compression spring positioned to compress relative to the second aperture while opposing rotation of the second pivot mechanism about the second roll axis.

16. The headphones as recited in claim 15 , wherein the first pivot mechanism further comprises a third compression spring positioned to compress relative to the first aperture while opposing rotation of the first pivot mechanism about the first roll axis; and

the second pivot mechanism further comprises a fourth compression spring positioned to compress relative to the second aperture while opposing rotation of the second pivot mechanism about the second roll axis.

17. The headphones as recited in claim 15 , wherein first and second axes are roll axes, the first pivot mechanism is further operable to enable the first earpiece housing to rotate about a first yaw axis, and the second pivot mechanism is further operable to enable the second earpiece to rotate about a second yaw axis.

18. The headphones as recited in claim 15 , wherein the first earpiece comprises a first mechanical stop configured to limit rotation of the first pivot mechanism about the first roll axis.

19. The headphones as recited in claim 18 , wherein the second earpiece comprises a second mechanical stop configured to limit rotation of the second pivot mechanism about the second roll axis.

20. The headphones as recited in claim 15 , wherein the first and second pivot mechanisms are positioned off-center of the respective first and second earpieces.
