Abstract

The present disclosure relates generally to traction devices for footwear. In some embodiments, cleats are provided that are operable to provide preexisting articles of footwear with enhanced grip, traction and performance. Certain embodiments of the present disclosure comprise a threaded male extension for interfacing with a preexisting shoe sole and at least one projecting gripping element for contacting or extending toward a ground surface.

Claims (28)

1. A self-tapping cleat operable to be selectively secured to a preexisting article of footwear initially provided without apertures in a sole, the cleat comprising:

a first portion comprising a metal having a first hardness;

a second portion comprising a plastic having a second hardness;

wherein the first portion comprises a male extension having an external thread, a distal point, and a flute to facilitate insertion of the first position into the sole of a preexisting article of footwear;

the second portion comprising a plurality of extensions that are operable to contact a ground surface, and wherein each of the plurality of extensions extend away from the male extension;

a shelf portion, wherein the male extension extends in a first direction away from the shelf portion and the plurality of extensions extend in a second direction away from the shelf portion;

at least one angled projection extending from the shelf portion, the angled projection comprising a ramp operable to contact the sole of the article of footwear;

a reinforcing rib provided at an intersection of the first portion and the shelf portion, wherein the reinforcing rib comprises a contoured leading edge to facilitate rotation and insertion of the cleat;

an interface operable to receive a tool for applying a force to the cleat; and

wherein the first hardness is greater than the second hardness.

2. The cleat of claim 1 , wherein an interface between the first portion and the second portion comprises a contoured interface to increase surface area between the first portion and the second portion.

3. The cleat of claim 1 , further comprising at least one angled projection extending from the shelf portion, the angled projection being operable to resist a removal rotation of the cleat.

4. The cleat of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a steel.

5. The cleat of claim 1 , wherein the second portion comprises a thermoplastic elastomer with a Shore durometer hardness of between approximately 80 and approximately 100.

6. The cleat of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of extensions comprises a thermoplastic elastomer with a Shore durometer hardness of between approximately 80 and approximately 100.

7. A cleat operable to be selectively secured to a preexisting article of footwear, the cleat comprising:

a base member comprising a shelf portion;

a threaded male extension extending in a first direction away from the shelf portion, the threaded male extension being operable to tap and threadingly engage a sole of an article of footwear;

wherein the threaded male extension comprises at least one reinforcing rib extending from a circumference of the threaded male extension, the at least one reinforcing rib having a rounded leading edge and a flat face opposite the leading edge;

at least one angled projection extending from the shelf portion, the angled projection comprising a ramp operable to contact the sole of the article of footwear, the ramp having a flat surface that is perpendicular to the shelf portion, and wherein the at least one angled projection allows for rotation and insertion of the cleat and resists a rotation in the opposite direction; wherein the threaded male extension comprises a flute on a distal end of the male extension to facilitate the insertion of the male extension into the article of footwear;

a plurality of extensions that are operable to contact a ground surface, and wherein each of the plurality of extensions extend away from the shelf portion in a second direction;

a tool interface that is operable to receive a tool for insertion and interconnection of the cleat to an article of footwear; and

wherein the plurality of extensions comprise a thermoplastic.

8. The cleat of claim 7 , wherein the threaded male extension comprises a glass-filled nylon.

9. The cleat of claim 7 , wherein the at least one reinforcing rib begins at the shelf portion and ends at a thread.

10. The cleat of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the male extension and the reinforcing rib comprises a fillet proximal to the shelf portion.

11. The cleat of claim 7 , wherein the threaded male extension comprises a metal.

12. The cleat of claim 8 , wherein the glass-filled nylon comprises at least about 20% glass by volume.
