Abstract

Purified air is provided, having a TVOC content of from less than 5 ppb to about 500 ppb, a Biologicals content of from less than 1 CFU/M 3 to 150 CFU/M 3 and a Particulate content of from about 1,000 0.3 μm particles per ft 3 to about 50,000 0.3 μm particles per ft 3 , or from about 600 0.5 μm particles per ft 3 to about 500,000 0.5 μm particles per ft 3 .

Claims (41)

1. An air purifier for purifying air by reducing the content of at least one of airborne biologicals, particulates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air, comprising:

a. a housing having an inlet for receiving a flow of source air and/or recirculated air and an outlet for exhausting a flow of purified air, the housing providing an air flow path for the flow of source air and/or recirculated air being purified in a downstream direction from the inlet towards the outlet;

b. an oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration within the housing;

c. a UV filtration within the housing;

d. an additional oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration within the housing; and

e. particulate filtration within the housing,

wherein the air purifier is adapted to exhaust at least a portion of the flow of purified air from the outlet having characteristics selected from the group: (a) a TVOC content of from less than 5 ppb to about 500 ppb; (b) a Biologicals content of from less than 1 CFU/M 3 to about 150 CFU/M 3 ; (c) a particulate content of from about 1,000 0.3 μm particles per ft 3 of air to about 50,000 0.3 μm particles per ft 3 of air, or from about 600 0.5 μm particles per ft 3 of air to about 10,500 0.5 μm particles per ft 3 of air, and (d) combinations thereof, and

wherein at least one of the oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration and the additional oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration comprises a plurality of filter trays arranged in a V-bank arrangement.

2. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the air purifier is an in-room unit.

3. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the air purifier is in line with at least a portion of the ductwork of a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (“HVAC”) system or an air handling unit (“AHU”).

4. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration and the additional oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration is selected from the group: bonded carbon, loose carbon, and combinations thereof.

5. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration and the additional oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration is selected from the group: bonded media, loose media, and combinations thereof.

6. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration and the additional oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration comprises one or more filters containing media selected from the group: blended carbon, KMnO 4 , other chemisorptive agents, and combinations thereof.

7. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the UV filtration includes at least one UV source.

8. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the UV filtration includes a plurality of UV sources.

9. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the UV filtration includes at least one UVC source capable of generating UV radiation at a wavelength of from 220 nm to 288 nm.

10. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the UV filtration includes at least one UVC source capable of generating UV radiation at a wavelength of from 254 to 260 nm.

11. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the particulate filtration includes one or more filters selected from the group: HEPA filters and ULPA filters.

12. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the air purifier is a stand-alone unit that is not part of a HVAC system or an AHU.

13. The air purifier of claim 1 , wherein the air purifier is a stand-alone unit which purifies in-room air.

14. An air purifier for purifying air by reducing the content of at least one of airborne biologicals, particulates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air, comprising:

a. a housing having an inlet for receiving a flow of source air and/or recirculated air and an outlet for exhausting a flow of purified air, the housing providing an air flow path for the flow of source air and/or recirculated air being purified in a downstream direction from the inlet towards the outlet;

b. a pre-filter;

c. a first oxidizing and adsorbing VOC filtration within the housing downstream from the pre-filter;

d. a first particulate filtration within the housing;
