Abstract

A server system 150 for providing data to at least one mobile device 200 , the server system comprising a processing resource 174 . In a first embodiment, the processing resource 174 is configured to generate contour data representing a boundary of a respective area for which a weather-related parameter has substantially the same value, the contour data being sent to a mobile device 200 . In a second embodiment, the processing resource 174 is configured to determine a plurality of parameter values of a model representative of weather-related data, and to filter the parameter values such that only some of the values of sent to a mobile device 200.

Claims (42)

1. A mobile device, comprising:

communications circuitry for transmitting and receiving data; and

processing circuitry;

the communications circuitry configured to:

transmit location data identifying at least one location; and

receive a plurality of model parameter values in response to transmitted location data; and

the processing circuitry configured to:

process the model parameter values to generate at least one data set representing a value of a location-dependent variable for a plurality of locations across an area, the variable being a weather-related variable that is representative of expected weather conditions as a function of location, and the processing including performing an inverse transform using the model parameter values, the inverse transform being a Fourier transform or a wavelet transform.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to process the model parameter values to:

generate a first data set representing the value of the location-dependent variable for a plurality of locations across a first area at a first time; and

generate a second data set representing the value of the location-dependent variable for a plurality of locations across a second area at a second time.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of model parameter values represent three dimensional data and the at least one data set is a two-dimensional data set.

4. The mobile device of claim 3 , wherein the two-dimensional data set represents a slice through the three dimensional data.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a display, wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to generate an image or sequence of images on the display from the at least one data set.

The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the weather conditions include one or more of: presence or amount of precipitation; wind speed and/or direction; presence or amount of lying snow; presence or amount of ice; level of visibility; presence or amount of fog; temperature; and presence or absence of cloud.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the variable is representative of an actual or expected modification in speed due to weather conditions.

8. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the processing of the model parameter values by the processing circuitry includes determining a value of at least one function using the model parameter values.

9. The mobile device of claim 8 , wherein the at least one function includes at least one Gaussian function.

10. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein:

the communications circuitry is further configured to receive a plurality of sets of model parameter values; and

the processing circuitry is further configured to:

generate a respective data set from each set of model parameter values; and

combine those data sets to produce a combined data set.

11. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein:

each respective data set represents an image for a respective different area; and

combining the data sets includes performing an image stitching process in respect of the images represented by the data sets.

12. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is or includes one of a mobile phone, a portable navigation device, or a portable computer.

13. A system for providing datasets representative of a variation of a parameter with location, the system comprising:

a server system; and

a mobile device, the mobile device including:

communications circuitry for transmitting and receiving data; and

processing circuitry;

the communications circuitry configured to:

transmit location data identifying at least one location; and

receive a plurality of model parameter values in response to transmitted location data; and

the processing circuitry configured to:

process the model parameter values to generate at least one data set representing a value of a location-dependent variable for a plurality of locations across an area, the variable being a weather-related variable that is representative of expected weather conditions as a function of location, and the processing including performing an inverse transform using the model parameter values, the inverse transform being a Fourier transform or a wavelet transform.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a mobile device including communications circuitry and processing circuitry, cause the mobile device to perform operations for:

transmitting location data identifying at least one location;

receiving a plurality of model parameter values in response to transmitted location data; and

processing the model parameter values to generate at least one data set representing a value of a location-dependent variable for a plurality of locations across an area, the variable being a weather-related variable that is representative of expected weather conditions as a function of location, and the processing including performing an inverse transform using the model parameter values, the inverse transform being a Fourier transform or a wavelet transform.
