Abstract

A drilling system configured to install a tap assembly into a ship skin is disclosed. The drilling system comprises a remotely-operated underwater vehicle and a drilling assembly configured to be operated by the remotely-operated underwater vehicle. The drilling assembly comprises a frame comprising an attachment element configured to hold the drilling assembly to a surface of the ship skin. The drilling assembly further comprises a drill actuation system comprising a linear actuator attached to the frame and a rotary actuator, wherein an actuation of the linear actuator is configured to move the rotary actuator relative to the frame to install the tap assembly into the ship skin by driving the tap assembly with the rotary actuator and the linear actuator.

7. The drilling system of claim 6 , wherein the tap assembly comprises self-tapping threads configured to affix the tap assembly to the ship skin.

8. The drilling system of claim 7 , wherein the tap assembly further comprises an annular cutter configured to drill a hole in the ship skin.

9. The drilling system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a control circuit comprising a programmable logic controller; and

a control interface coupled to the control circuit, wherein the control interface is configured to remotely control the valve control module.

10. A remotely-operated drilling assembly configured to install a tap assembly into a ship skin, wherein the remotely-operated drilling assembly comprises:

a frame, comprising:

a slide member; and

an attachment element configured to hold the drilling assembly to a surface of the ship skin, wherein the attachment element is configured to be activated and deactivated remotely; and

a hydraulic drill actuation system configured to be actuated remotely, wherein the hydraulic drill actuation system comprises:

a sub-frame movably supported within the frame by way of the slide member;

a fluidic linear actuator attached to the frame and configured to move the sub-frame relative to the frame upon a remote actuation of the fluidic linear actuator; and

a fluidic rotary actuator mounted to the sub-frame, wherein the actuation of the fluidic linear actuator is configured to move the fluidic rotary actuator relative to the frame to install the tap assembly into the ship skin by driving the tap assembly with the fluidic rotary actuator and the hydraulic linear actuator; and

a valve control module configured to control a plurality of valves to operate the drill actuation system.

11. The remotely-operated drilling assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a remotely-operated underwater vehicle.

12. The remotely-operated drilling assembly of claim 10 , wherein the fluidic rotary actuator comprises a hydraulic drill.

13. The remotely-operated drilling assembly of claim 10 , further comprising the tap assembly.

14. The remotely-operated drilling assembly of claim 13 , wherein the tap assembly comprises self-tapping threads configured to affix the tap assembly to the ship skin.

15. The remotely-operated drilling assembly of claim 14 , wherein the tap assembly further comprises an annular cutter configured to drill a hole in the ship skin.

16. A remotely-operated drilling system configured to install a tap assembly into a ship skin without a diver, wherein the remotely-operated drilling system comprises:

a control interface; and
