Abstract

Embodiments herein describe a method and associated controller for a wind turbine. The method comprises determining one or more characteristics of a sensor signal received from a mechanical sensor of the wind turbine; determining, based on the one or more characteristics of the sensor signal, an icing condition of the wind turbine; and controlling operation of one or more wind turbine systems based on the determined icing condition.

5. The controller of claim 1 , wherein determining one or more characteristics of the sensor signal comprises:

determining a moving standard deviation of the sensor signal.

6. The controller of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether an accumulation of ice on the wind turbine is increasing or decreasing.

7. The controller of claim 1 , wherein determining one or more characteristics of the sensor signal is performed relative to a reference signal.

8. A method comprising:

determining one or more characteristics of a sensor signal received from a mechanical sensor of a wind turbine, wherein the one or more characteristics of the sensor signal indicate ice accumulation on the mechanical sensor;

determining that ice is accumulating on the wind turbine based on the one or more characteristics of the sensor signal indicating ice accumulation on the mechanical sensor; and

controlling an operation of one or more wind turbine systems in response to determining that ice is accumulating on the wind turbine.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the sensor signal comprises one of a wind speed signal and a wind direction signal.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining one or more characteristics of the sensor signal comprises:

determining frequency information included in the sensor signal.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein determining one or more characteristics of the sensor signal further comprises one or more of:

determining whether a predefined percentage of power included in the sensor signal occurs below or above a predefined threshold frequency;

determining whether the power included in the sensor signal exceeds a predefined amplitude at a predefined frequency;
