Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to migrating logical volumes from a thick provisioned layout to a thin provisioned layout, and includes one or more processors and one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media comprising instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause one or more components of the system to perform operations comprising creating an abstraction layer on top of a logical volume in a storage device, the abstraction layer for accessing the logical volume, the logical volume one of a plurality of logical volumes in a volume group of the storage device; allocating a thin pool from remaining storage space in the volume group of the storage device; creating a snapshot of the logical volume; adding a thin virtual volume corresponding to the logical volume to the thin pool; and copying data from the snapshot to the thin virtual volume.

Claims (51)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media comprising instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause one or more components of the system to perform operations comprising:

creating an abstraction layer on top of a logical volume in a storage device, the abstraction layer for accessing the logical volume, the logical volume one of a plurality of logical volumes in a volume group of the storage device;

allocating a thin pool from remaining storage space in the volume group of the storage device;

creating a snapshot of the logical volume;

adding a thin virtual volume corresponding to the logical volume to the thin pool; and

copying data from the snapshot to the thin virtual volume.

2. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

suspending access to the logical volume when the copying of the data from the snapshot is complete.

3. The system of claim 2 , the operations further comprising:

computing changes to the logical volume after creation of the snapshot, the computed changes merged into the thin virtual volume.

4. The system of claim 3 , the operations further comprising:

remapping the abstraction layer to point to the thin virtual volume.

5. The system of claim 4 , the operations further comprising:

deleting the logical volume to create free space in the storage device, the free space available for addition to the thin pool.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein user applications operate from the logical volume while the data is copied from the snapshot.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the snapshot of the logical volume is a copy-on-write (CoW) snapshot.

8. A method, comprising:

creating an abstraction layer on top of a logical volume in a storage device, the abstraction layer for accessing the logical volume, the logical volume one of a plurality of logical volumes in a volume group of the storage device;

allocating a thin pool from remaining storage space in the volume group of the storage device;

creating a snapshot of the logical volume;

adding a thin virtual volume corresponding to the logical volume to the thin pool; and

copying data from the snapshot to the thin virtual volume.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

suspending access to the logical volume when the copying of the data from the snapshot is complete.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

computing changes to the logical volume after creation of the snapshot, the computed changes merged into the thin virtual volume.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

remapping the abstraction layer to point to the thin virtual volume.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

deleting the logical volume to create free space in the storage device, the free space available for addition to the thin pool.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

migrating the plurality of logical volumes so that the thin pool comprises a space corresponding to the volume group.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein user applications operate from the logical volume while the data is copied from the snapshot.

15. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause performance of operations comprising:

creating an abstraction layer on top of a logical volume in a storage device, the abstraction layer for accessing the logical volume, the logical volume one of a plurality of logical volumes in a volume group of the storage device;

allocating a thin pool from remaining storage space in the volume group of the storage device;

creating a snapshot of the logical volume;

adding a thin virtual volume corresponding to the logical volume to the thin pool; and

copying data from the snapshot to the thin virtual volume.

16. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 15 , the operations further comprising:

suspending access to the logical volume when the copying of the data from the snapshot is complete.

17. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

computing changes to the logical volume after creation of the snapshot, the computed changes merged into the thin virtual volume.

18. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 17 , the operations further comprising:

remapping the abstraction layer to point to the thin virtual volume.

19. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 18 , the operations further comprising:

deleting the logical volume to create free space in the storage device, the free space available for addition to the thin pool.

20. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 19 , the operations further comprising:

migrating the plurality of logical volumes so that the thin pool comprises a space corresponding to the volume group.
