Electronic devices with convex displays
Electronic devices may be provided with convex displays. A convex display may be used to maximize the internal volume of a device. Convex displays may be formed from one or more flexible layers. A flexible display layer may be mounted to a rigid support structure or a rigid cover layer. Flexible display layers that conform to the curved shape of a rigid structure may provide additional internal volume in which internal components of the device may be positioned.
1. An electronic device having first and second opposing surfaces, comprising:
a housing comprising a glass portion and having a metal portion that forms at least part of a sidewall;
a first display portion on the first surface, wherein the first display portion displays images through the glass portion of the housing;
a second display portion on the second surface;
electronic components interposed between the first and second display portions.
2. The electronic device defined in claim 1 wherein the housing comprises an additional glass portion and wherein the second display portion displays images through the additional glass portion.
3. The electronic device defined in claim 1 wherein the first display portion comprises organic light-emitting diode pixels.
4. The electronic device defined in claim 1 wherein the first display portion has a curved edge portion.
5. The electronic device defined in claim 4 wherein the first and second display portions are joined by the curved edge portion.
6. The electronic device defined in claim 5 wherein the glass portion has a curved portion that covers the curved edge portion.
7. The electronic device defined in claim 1 wherein the images extend from the first display portion to the second display portion.
8. The electronic device defined in claim 1 wherein the first and second display portions are separated by a portion of the housing.
9. The electronic device defined in claim 8 wherein the portion of the housing is located along a sidewall of the electronic device.
10. An electronic device, comprising:
a display that wraps from a front surface of the electronic device to a back surface of the electronic device;
a metal sidewall located between the front and back surfaces;
a transparent cover layer through which the display displays images on the front and back surfaces; and
electronic components located between the front and back surfaces.
11. The electronic device defined in claim 10 wherein the transparent cover layer comprises glass.
12. The electronic device defined in claim 10 wherein the display comprises organic light-emitting diode pixels.
13. The electronic device defined in claim 10 wherein the display comprises a curved portion.
14. The electronic device defined in claim 13 wherein the curved portion is located along a sidewall of the electronic device.
15. An electronic device, comprising:
a housing having a metal member;
a first display region with first pixels on a front surface of the electronic device;
a second display region with second pixels on a back surface of the electronic device, wherein the metal member separates the first and second display regions; and
electronic components located between the first and second display regions.
16. The electronic device defined in claim 15 wherein the first pixels in the first display region and the second pixels in the second display region comprise organic light-emitting diode pixels.
17. The electronic device defined in claim 15 further comprising a glass cover layer overlapping the first display region.
18. The electronic device defined in claim 17 wherein the first display region has a curved edge.
19. The electronic device defined in claim 18 wherein the glass cover layer has a curved portion overlapping the curved edge of the first display region.
