Abstract

An illumination device (e.g., an electric candle, etc.) generally includes a shell, a housing coupled to the shell, a first light source, and a pendulum supporting the first light source generally above the housing, wherein the pendulum is pivotally coupled to the housing and configured to move the first light source relative to the housing. The device also includes a flame-shaped head, where the first light source is disposed within the flame-shaped head, and a second light source arranged inside the shell and configured to illuminate the shell from the inside out. A printed circuit board assembly is arranged inside the shell for controlling operation of the first light source and the second light source.

Claims (47)

1. An electric candle, comprising:

a shell;

a housing coupled to the shell;

a first light source;

a pendulum supporting the first light source generally above the housing, the pendulum pivotally coupled to the housing and configured to move the first light source relative to the housing;

a flame-shaped head, the first light source disposed within the flame-shaped head;

a second light source arranged inside the shell and configured to illuminate the shell from the inside out; and

a printed circuit board assembly arranged inside the shell for controlling operation of the first light source and the second light source.

2. The electric candle of claim 1 , further comprising a support member coupled to the housing and the pendulum, the pendulum configured to pivot relative to the housing, via the support member, to thereby move the first light source relative to the housing.

3. The electric candle of claim 2 , further comprising a driving device coupled to the pendulum and configured to move the pendulum, to thereby move the first light source relative to the housing.

4. The electric candle of claim 3 , wherein the driving device comprises an electromagnetic coil and a magnet; and

wherein the magnet is arranged at a lower end portion of the pendulum and the electromagnetic coil is arranged at a bottom portion of the housing and adjacent to the magnet.

5. The electric candle of claim 4 , further comprising a battery compartment provided inside the shell and arranged below the housing, the battery compartment including a battery cartridge configured to hold at least one battery for providing power to the electric candle.

6. The electric candle of claim 5 , wherein the printed circuit board assembly is electrically connected to an electrode of the battery cartridge.

7. The electric candle of claim 6 , further comprising a battery cover coupled to the battery cartridge and configured to retain the at least one battery within the battery cartridge.

8. The electric candle of claim 1 , wherein the pendulum includes a tapered end portion, and wherein the pendulum is pivotally supported by the housing via the tapered end portion.

9. The electric candle of claim 1 , further comprising a color element including a generally translucent and tube-shaped sleeve disposed within the flame-shaped head for creating a color effect when the first light source transmits light through the color element and the flame-shaped head.

10. The electric candle of claim 1 , further comprising at least one wire electrically connecting the first light source to the printed circuit board assembly, a first end portion of the at least one wire attached to the pendulum and configured to move with the pendulum, and a second end portion of the at least one wire positioned away from the pendulum and fixed in place relative to pivotal movement of the pendulum;

wherein the at least one wire has a diameter of about 0.5 millimeters or less to avoid impact to the pivotal movement of the pendulum.

11. The electric candle of claim 1 , wherein the shell includes a hollow interior, a closed top and an open bottom, and wherein the closed top defines a first through hole;

wherein the housing includes a hollow interior and a second through hole defined in a top of the housing, and wherein the housing is disposed at least partly within the shell so that the first through hole of the shell and the second through hole of the housing are coaxially arranged;

wherein an upper portion of the pendulum extends through the second through hole of the housing and a lower portion of the pendulum is arranged inside the hollow interior of the housing; and

wherein the flame-shaped head is arranged at least partially outside the housing.

12. An electric candle, comprising:

a shell having a hollow interior, a top portion and a bottom portion, and wherein the top portion defines a through hole;

a housing coupled to the shell and disposed at least partly within the shell;

a light source;

a pendulum supporting the light source, the pendulum pivotally coupled to the housing and configured to move the light source relative to the housing, wherein an upper portion of the pendulum passes through the through hole and a lower portion of the pendulum is arranged inside the shell;

a flame-shaped head, wherein the light source is disposed within the flame-shaped head, and wherein the flame-shaped head is arranged at least partially outside the shell;

a control unit for providing power to the electric candle and for controlling operation of the light source; and

at least one wire electrically connecting the light source to the control unit, a first end portion of the at least one wire attached to the pendulum and configured to move with the pendulum, and a second end portion of the at least one wire positioned away from the pendulum and fixed in place relative to pivotal movement of the pendulum, the at least one wire having a diameter of about 0.5 millimeters or less to avoid impact to the pivotal movement of the pendulum.

13. The electric candle of claim 12 , wherein the pendulum includes a tapered end portion and wherein the pendulum is pivotally supported by the housing via the tapered end portion.

14. The electric candle of claim 12 , further comprising a driving device coupled to the pendulum and configured to move the pendulum, to thereby move the light source relative to the housing.

15. The electric candle of claim 14 , wherein the driving device comprises an electromagnetic coil and a magnet; and

wherein the magnet is arranged at the lower portion of the pendulum and the electromagnetic coil is arranged at a bottom portion of the housing and adjacent to the magnet.

16. An electric candle, comprising:

a shell having a hollow interior, a top portion and a bottom portion, and wherein the top portion defines a through hole;

a housing coupled to the shell and disposed at least partly within the shell;
