Abstract

New medical circuit components and methods for forming such components are disclosed. These components include microstructures for humidification and/or condensate management. The disclosed microstructures can be incorporated into a variety of components, including tubes (e.g., inspiratory breathing tubes and expiratory breathing tubes and other tubing between various elements of a breathing circuit, such as ventilators, humidifiers, filters, water traps, sample lines, connectors, gas analyzers, and the like), Y-connectors, catheter mounts, humidifiers, and patient interfaces (e.g., masks for covering the nose and face, nasal masks, cannulas, nasal pillows, etc.), floats, probes, and sensors in a variety of medical circuits.

Claims (32)

1. A component for use in a medical circuit comprising:

a first region that, in use, contacts liquid;

a second region that is distinct from the first region, wherein the second region is configured, in use, to be exposed to an air flow to or from a patient;

a microstructured surface in communication with the first region and the second region configured, in use, to wick liquid from the first region to the second region such that the liquid is exposed to the air flow;

wherein the microstructured surface comprises generally inverse-trapezoid-shaped structures, each including a first ridge and a second ridge having similar dimensions and defining a first channel therebetween.

2. The component of claim 1 , wherein the microstructured surface comprises a substrate having an equilibrium contact angle less than about π/2 radians.

3. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second region, in use, is exposed to higher velocity air and the first region, in use, is exposed to lower velocity air.

4. The component of claim 1 , wherein the second region and/or the microstructured surface is configured to communicate with a heat source.

5. The component of claim 1 , wherein the microstructured surface comprises generally parallel microchannels.

6. The component of claim 1 , wherein the first ridge and the second ridge are taller ridges, wherein a shorter ridge is disposed between the first ridge and the second ridge.

7. The component of claim 6 , wherein the taller ridges are 2-3 times taller than the shorter ridge.

8. The component of claim 6 , wherein the shorter ridge is 3-5 times wider than the taller ridges.

9. The component of claim 6 , further comprising a second channel between the first ridge and the shorter ridge.

10. The component of claim 9 , wherein the depth of the first channel is 2-3 times the depth of the second channel.

11. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component forms at least a portion of a mask.

12. The component of claim 11 , further comprising a drain in communication with the second region.

13. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component forms at least a portion of an inner wall of a conduit.

14. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component is an insert in an inner lumen of a conduit.

15. The component of claim 1 , wherein the component forms at least a portion of a conduit, wherein a wall of the conduit is configured to communicate with a heat source.

16. A component for use in a medical circuit for delivering air flow to or from a patient, comprising:

a first region that, in use, contacts liquid;

a second region that is distinct from the first region;

a microstructured surface in communication with the first region and the second region configured, in use, to wick liquid from the first region to the second region, wherein the second region is exposed to the air flow;

wherein the microstructured surface comprises generally inverse-trapezoid-shaped structures, each including a first ridge and a second ridge having similar dimensions and defining a first channel therebetween;

wherein the generally inverse-trapezoid-shaped structures comprise a second channel adjacent the first ridge and a third channel adjacent the second ridge, the second and third channels having similar dimensions, each being located between the first ridge and the second ridge, and each being formed as a recess extending directly from the first channel.

17. The component of claim 16 , wherein the second channel and the third channel are separate from one another and separately extend from the first channel.

18. A medical circuit component for use with humidified gas, comprising:

a wall defining a space within and wherein at least a part of the wall comprises a surface including a plurality of microstructures, the microstructures being configured, in use, to wick liquid from a first region holding liquid water to a second region exposed to an air flow to or from a patient,

wherein the microstructures are generally inverse-trapezoid-shaped structures, each including a first ridge and a second ridge having similar dimensions and defining a first channel therebetween.

19. The component of claim 18 , wherein microstructured surface comprises a substrate having an equilibrium contact angle less than about π/2 radians.

20. The component of claim 18 , wherein the generally inverse-trapezoid-shaped structures comprise a second channel adjacent the first ridge.

21. The component of claim 20 , wherein the depth of the first channel is 2-3 times the depth of the second channel.
