Abstract

A blower includes a housing including an inlet and an outlet, a bearing-housing structure provided to the housing and adapted to rotatably support a rotor, a motor provided to the bearing-housing structure and adapted to drive the rotor, and an impeller provided to the rotor. The bearing-housing structure includes a bearing shaft having a bearing surface that rotatably supports the rotor. The bearing shaft provides only a single bearing of the non-ball bearing type for the rotor.

Claims (35)

1. A blower, comprising:

a housing including an inlet and an outlet,

wherein the housing includes a top cover and a bottom cover, and

wherein the housing forms at least a portion of a volute to direct air towards the outlet;

a bearing-housing structure supported by the bottom cover of the housing, the bearing-housing structure including a housing part;

a rotor;

a motor adapted to drive the rotor, the motor including a stator assembly;

an impeller provided to the rotor; and

a bearing cartridge supported by the housing part of the bearing-housing structure,

wherein the bearing cartridge includes a tubular sleeve and two spaced-apart bearings supported within the tubular sleeve to rotatably support the rotor,

wherein the stator assembly is provided to an exterior surface of the tubular sleeve of the bearing cartridge, and

wherein the housing part of the bearing-housing structure includes a base providing a tube portion to support the tubular sleeve of the bearing cartridge,

wherein the housing part further includes an annular disk extending radially from the base,

wherein the annular disk includes a lower side and an upper side,

wherein the lower side of the annular disk is supported by and spaced from the bottom cover of the housing, and

wherein the tubular sleeve of the bearing cartridge extends from the tube portion away from the upper side of the annular disk such that a first portion of the exterior surface of the tubular sleeve engages the tube portion and a second portion of the exterior surface of the tubular sleeve engages the stator assembly.

2. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the annular disk extends radially beyond an outer edge of the impeller to provide a shielding function.

3. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the housing part is molded of a plastic material.

4. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing cartridge includes a spacer between the spaced-apart bearings, the spacer configured to provide a preload to each of the spaced-apart bearings.

5. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the impeller includes a plurality of curved blades.

6. The blower according to claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of curved blades includes a first edge provided to a shroud and a second edge opposite to the first edge, and wherein each of the plurality of curved blades is curved in a generally clockwise direction when each of the plurality of curved blades is viewed from the second edge.

7. The blower according to claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of curved blades includes a first edge provided to a shroud and a second edge opposite to the first edge, and wherein each of the plurality of curved blades is curved in a generally counter-clockwise direction when each of the plurality of curved blades is viewed from the second edge.

8. The blower according to claim 5 , wherein the impeller includes 22 blades.

9. The blower according to claim 5 , wherein the impeller includes 11 blades.

10. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the inlet is axially aligned with an axis of the blower and the outlet is tangential to the inlet.

11. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the motor further includes a magnet and a rotor cap, the rotor cap including an interior surface that supports the magnet and an exterior surface that supports the impeller, and wherein the rotor cap is engaged with the rotor such that the stator assembly acts on the magnet to cause spinning movement of the rotor cap and hence the impeller in use.

12. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the motor is at least partially nested within the impeller.

13. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing-housing structure is structured to define at least a portion of the volute to direct air towards the outlet.

14. The blower according to claim 13 , wherein the volute expands in cross-sectional area towards the outlet.

15. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the volute has a generally semi-circular cross-section that expands in area towards the outlet.

16. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing-housing structure includes an end portion with a stepped configuration that cooperates with a separating wall extend from the top cover of the housing to define the volute to direct air towards the outlet, the end portion and separating wall separating the volute into a high speed airpath region and a low speed airpath region.

17. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the inlet, the outlet, and the rotor are axially aligned with an axis of the blower.

18. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing-housing structure further includes stator vanes extending from the lower side of the annular disk to direct air towards the outlet, wherein the stator vanes support the bearing-housing structure on the bottom cover, and wherein the annular disk is configured to provide a shielding function between the stator vanes and impeller blades of the impeller.

19. The blower according to claim 18 , wherein one or more of the stator vanes comprises a retaining element to retain the bearing-housing structure to the bottom cover.

20. The blower according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the exterior surface of the tubular sleeve is axially spaced apart from the second portion of the exterior surface of the tubular sleeve, such that the tube portion is axially spaced apart from the stator assembly.
