Abstract

A gas turbine engine may include a high speed spool, a low speed spool, a first epicyclic gear system, and a second epicyclic gear system. Generally, the high speed spool mechanically connects a high pressure turbine to a high pressure compressor, and the low speed spool mechanically connects a low pressure turbine to at least one of a fan and a prop via the first epicyclic gear system and to a low pressure compressor via the second epicyclic gear system, according to various embodiments. The first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system may include a common sun gear shaft.

Claims (31)

1. A gas turbine engine comprising:

a high speed spool mechanically connecting a high pressure turbine to a high pressure compressor;

a first epicyclic gear system;

a second epicyclic gear system; and

a low speed spool mechanically connecting a low pressure turbine to at least one of a fan and a prop via the first epicyclic gear system and to a low pressure compressor via the second epicyclic gear system, wherein:

the first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system are mounted together via a common static support structure, and

the common static support structure is supported between respective gear carriers of the first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system.

2. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system comprise a common sun gear shaft.

3. The gas turbine engine of claim 2 , wherein the common sun gear shaft comprises a first sun gear that is forward of a second sun gear, wherein the first sun gear is mechanically connected to the first epicyclic gear system and the second sun gear is mechanically connected to the second epicyclic gear system.

4. The gas turbine engine of claim 3 , wherein the first sun gear has a same radius as the second sun gear.

5. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the fan and the prop and the low pressure compressor are rotatably supported by the common static support structure via one or more bearings.

6. The gas turbine engine of claim 5 , wherein the one or more bearings for supporting the at least one of the fan and the prop and the low pressure compressor are radially outward of the common static support structure.

7. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the common static support structure is parallel to an engine central longitudinal axis of the gas turbine engine.

8. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the common static support structure is coupled to an engine case of the gas turbine engine via a support member that extends aft from the second epicyclic gear system toward a location aft of both the at least one of the fan and the prop and the low pressure compressor.

9. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the fan and the prop is the fan, wherein the fan and the low pressure compressor are configured to rotate in a same direction.

10. The gas turbine engine of claim 1 , wherein each of the first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system is a star-type system.

11. The gas turbine engine of claim 10 , wherein:

the first epicyclic gear system comprises a first rotating ring gear;

the at least one of the fan and the prop is coupled to the first rotating ring gear;

the second epicyclic gear system comprises a second rotating ring gear; and

the low pressure compressor is coupled to the second rotating ring gear.

12. A gas turbine engine comprising:

a high speed spool mechanically connecting a high pressure turbine to a high pressure compressor;

a first epicyclic gear system;

a second epicyclic gear system; and

a low speed spool mechanically connecting a low pressure turbine to at least one of a fan and a prop via the first epicyclic gear system and to a low pressure compressor via the second epicyclic gear system, wherein the at least one of the fan and the prop is the fan, wherein the fan and the low pressure compressor are configured to rotate in a same direction.

13. A gas turbine engine comprising:

a high speed spool mechanically connecting a high pressure turbine to a high pressure compressor;

a first epicyclic gear system;

a second epicyclic gear system; and

a low speed spool mechanically connecting a low pressure turbine to at least one of a fan and a prop via the first epicyclic gear system and to a low pressure compressor via the second epicyclic gear system, wherein each of the first epicyclic gear system and the second epicyclic gear system is a star-type system.
