Abstract

A system comprising a plurality of self-powered devices and at least one remote device. The plurality of self-powered devices may be configured to perform instructions. The plurality of self-powered devices may be configured to select one of a plurality of modes of operation. The remote device may be configured to store scheduling data. The remote device may be configured to communicate with the self-powered devices. The self-powered devices may select one of the plurality of modes of operation based on the scheduling data.

Claims (49)

1. A device comprising:

a processor;

a power source; and

a memory comprising instructions for selecting one of a plurality of modes of operation, wherein

(A) the plurality of modes of operation comprise (i) a low-power mode of operation in which the device has less than full functionality, and (ii) a high-power mode of operation in which the device has more functionality than in the low-power mode,

(B) the instructions for selecting one of said plurality of modes of operation comprise instructions for conserving power by transitioning from the high-power mode of operation to the low-power mode of operation,

(C) said instructions are adaptively determined based on input data comprised of a combination of one or more of user input, sensor data, and an application,

(D) said device is assigned to one or more resources,

(E) said device is configured to determine a usage of said resources,

(F) said instructions comprise selecting said modes of operation based on said determined usage,

(G) one of said modes of operation is a standby mode and said device is configured to exit said standby mode based on a signal and

(H) said device is configured to prevent selecting said standby mode (i) during scheduled activities, (ii) if there is insufficient time between two of said scheduled activities, (iii) if said device is associated with a contingent activity and (iv) based on user settings.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said device is configured to prevent one of said resources from presenting a screen saver.

3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said device is configured to opportunistically select said standby mode based on (i) activities scheduled by a remote device and (ii) user settings.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein (i) one of said modes of operation is a managed-power mode and (ii) said device is configured to manage a duty-cycle to save energy during said managed-power mode.

5. The device according to claim 4 , wherein said duty-cycle comprises a duty-cycle of one of said resources assigned to said device.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said usage is based on a proxy for said usage.

7. The device according to claim 6 , wherein said proxy for said usage is at least one of (a) a direct proxy and (b) an indirect proxy.

8. The device according to claim 7 , wherein said indirect proxy comprises at least one of inactivity from a human interface device connected to said device, activities scheduled by a remote device and context information implemented to predict said usage.

9. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said usage is determined based on (i) a classification function and (ii) one or more evidence vectors.

10. The device according to claim 9 , wherein said classification function is implemented to (i) minimize an expected probability of error based on a set of said evidence vectors and (ii) return a result based on a query by said device.

11. The device according to claim 10 , wherein (i) said device is further configured to re-label one or more of said evidence vectors when said result returned by said classification function is incorrect and (ii) said classification function is recalculated based on said re-labeled evidence vectors.

12. The device according to claim 9 , wherein said classification function is assumed to have classified one of said evidence vectors incorrectly if said assigned resource has been reactivated.

13. The device according to claim 9 , wherein (i) said device confirms a result of said classification function with a user and (ii) if said result is not confirmed by said user said classification function is assumed to have classified one of said evidence vectors incorrectly.

14. The device according to claim 9 , wherein (i) said device confirms a result of said classification function with a remote device and (ii) said result is configured to determine whether said classification function has classified one of said evidence vectors correctly.

15. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said device is further configured to prevent a display device from switching to a power-saving mode.

16. A system comprising:

a plurality of self-powered devices, wherein said self-powered devices are configured to (i) perform instructions, (ii) select one of a plurality of modes of operation and (iii) be assigned to one of a plurality of resources; and

at least one remote device configured to (a) allocate said resources for one or more activities and (b) communicate with said plurality of self-powered devices, wherein

(A) said plurality of self-powered devices (i) determine a usage of said resources and (ii) select one of said modes of operation based on said determined usage,

(B) one of said modes of operation is a standby mode and said self-powered devices are configured to exit said standby mode based on a signal and

(C) said self-powered devices are configured to prevent selecting said standby mode (i) during scheduled activities, (ii) if there is insufficient time between two of said scheduled activities, (iii) if said self-powered devices are associated with a contingent activity and (iv) based on user settings.

17. The system according to claim 16 , wherein said plurality of resources comprise a network of digital signage and information kiosks.

18. The system according to claim 16 , wherein said plurality of resources comprise an illumination for public buildings, public spaces, plazas, streets and paths.

19. A device comprising:

a processor;

a power source; and

a memory comprising instructions for selecting one of a plurality of modes of operation, wherein

(G) said usage is determined based on (i) a classification function and (ii) one or more evidence vectors,

(H) said classification function is implemented to (i) minimize an expected probability of error based on a set of said evidence vectors and (ii) return a result based on a query by said device,

(I) said device is further configured to re-label one or more of said evidence vectors when said result returned by said classification function is incorrect and

(G) said classification function is recalculated based on said re-labeled evidence vectors.

20. The device according to claim 19 , wherein (i) one of said modes of operation is a standby mode and (ii) said device is configured to exit said standby mode based on a signal.
