Abstract

Systems and methods for damping torsional oscillations of downhole systems are described. The systems include a downhole string comprising a disintegration device and a damping system at least one of in and on the downhole string, the damping system configured to damp torsional oscillations of the downhole string. The methods include installing a damping system at least one of on and in the downhole system with the downhole system including a downhole string having a disintegration device and the damping system is configured to damp torsional oscillation of the downhole string.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a cover sleeve arranged about the at least one damper element arranged about the bit shank, the cover sleeve configured to protect the at least one damper element arranged about the bit shank.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein:

the at least one damper element is a ring-type structure circumferentially arranged about the bit shank,

the bit body comprises a plurality of blades, and

the ring-type structure comprises one or more mass structures, wherein at least one mass structure is arranged relative to one of the plurality of blades.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the disintegration device comprises at least one blade and wherein the at least one damper element is arranged in the at least one blade.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one damper element is a tangential damper element.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one damper element comprises

a mass element movable in the at least one blade.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the damping system comprises:

a mounting element; and

a contact element,

wherein the mass element is arranged between the mounting element and the contact element and wherein the mounting element is configured to urge the mass element toward the contact element.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the damping system comprises a limit stop configured to damp movement of the mass element.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mean velocity is lower than the amplitude of the periodic velocity fluctuation.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one damper element arranged in contact with a portion of the disintegration device.
