Low friction cannula seals for minimally invasive robotic surgery
Embodiments of a cannula seal are disclosed. In some embodiments, a cannula seal can include a base portion that engages with a cannula; and a seal portion integrally formed with the base portion that slidebly engages with an instrument shaft such that an insertion frictional force between the seal portion and the instrument shaft for insertion of the instrument shaft is symmetrical and substantially equal with a retraction frictional force.
1. A cannula seal, comprising:
a base portion sized and shaped to engage with a cannula; and
a seal portion connected to the base portion, the seal portion comprising:
a proximal seal lip defining a proximal seal opening configured to receive an instrument shaft; and
a distal seal lip symmetrically opposite to the proximal seal lip, the distal seal lip defining a distal seal opening configured to receive the instrument shaft, wherein:
the proximal seal lip extends from the base portion to a first terminal end in a distal-to-proximal direction;
the distal seal lip extends from the base portion to a second terminal end in a proximal-to-distal direction; and
the first and second terminal ends are free ends spaced apart from the base portion.
2. The cannula seal of claim 1 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are integrally formed with the base portion.
3. The cannula seal of claim 1 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are oriented such that:
during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion, a friction of the distal seal lip against the instrument shaft is lower than a friction of the proximal seal lip against the instrument shaft, and
during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion, the friction of the proximal seal lip against the instrument shaft is lower than the friction of the distal seal lip against the instrument shaft.
4. The cannula seal of claim 3 , wherein:
total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion is substantially the same as total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion.
5. The cannula seal of claim 1 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are substantially identically constructed or identically constructed.
6. The cannula seal of claim 1 , wherein:
the second terminal end of the distal seal lip is connected to the base portion at a first axial distance;
the first terminal end of the proximal seal lip is connected to the base portion at a second axial distance; and
the first axial distance is less than the second axial distance.
7. The cannula seal of claim 6 , wherein:
the first axial distance and the second axial distance are selected to offset insufflation pressure applied to the distal seal lip to make total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion is substantially the same as total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion.
8. The cannula seal of claim 1 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip point towards each other.
9. The cannula seal of claim 8 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip together form a cavity configured to receive a fluid to create an outward pressure of the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip to controllably engage the instrument shaft.
10. A cannula seal, comprising:
a base portion sized and shaped to engage with a seal retainer of a cannula; and
a seal portion connected to the base portion, the seal portion comprising:
a proximal seal lip defining a proximal seal opening configured to receive an instrument shaft; and
a distal seal lip, the distal lip defining a distal seal opening configured to receive the instrument shaft, and the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip integrally formed with the base portion, wherein:
the proximal seal lip extends from the base portion to a first terminal end in a proximal-to-distal direction;
the distal seal lip extends from the base portion to a second terminal end in a distal-to-proximal direction; and
the first and second terminal ends are free ends spaced apart from the base portion.
11. The cannula seal of claim 10 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are oriented such that:
during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion, friction between the distal seal lip and the instrument shaft is lower than friction between the proximal seal lip and the instrument shaft, and
during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion, friction between the proximal seal lip and the instrument shaft is lower than friction between the distal seal lip and the instrument shaft.
12. The cannula seal of claim 11 , wherein:
total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion is substantially the same as a total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion.
13. The cannula seal of claim 10 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are identically constructed or substantially identically constructed.
14. The cannula seal of claim 10 , wherein:
the second terminal end of the distal seal lip is connected to the base portion at a first axial distance;
the first terminal end of the proximal seal lip is connected to the base portion at a second axial distance; and
the first axial distance is less than the second axial distance.
15. The cannula seal of claim 14 , wherein:
the first axial distance and the second axial distance are selected to offset insufflation pressure applied to the distal seal lip to make total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion is substantially the same as total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion.
16. The cannula seal of claim 10 , wherein:
the proximal seal lip is symmetrically opposite to the distal seal lip.
17. A cannula seal, comprising:
a base portion sized and shaped to engage with a cannula; and
a seal portion connected to the base portion, the seal portion comprising:
a proximal seal lip defining a proximal seal opening, and
a distal seal lip symmetrically opposite to the proximal seal lip, the distal lip defining a distal seal opening, and
the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip being configured to receive an instrument shaft;
wherein the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip are oriented such that:
friction of the distal seal lip against the instrument shaft is lower than friction of the proximal seal lip against the instrument shaft during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion, and
friction of the proximal seal lip against the instrument shaft is lower than the friction of the distal seal lip against the instrument shaft during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion.
18. The cannula seal of claim 17 , wherein:
the distal seal lip is connected to the base portion at an axial distance that is less than an axial distance at which the proximal seal lip is connected to the base portion, such that the axial distance at which the proximal seal lip is connected to the base portion and the axial distance at which the distal seal lip is connected to the base portion are selected to offset insufflation pressure applied to the distal seal lip to make a total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during retraction of the instrument shaft from the seal portion substantially equal to a total friction applied to the instrument shaft by the proximal seal lip and the distal seal lip during insertion of the instrument shaft into the seal portion.
