Abstract

An improvement to a roadside sprayer fixates spray nozzles on a registration plate. The registration plate may include integral tabs depending on the application. Inclination of the tabs is adjustable to place streams and droplets in a desired swath coverage. With the nozzles rigidly mounted onto the plate, the entire plate is notated. The use of the registration plate in a spray unit creates a uniform nutation among the nozzles, thereby reducing variability in droplet placement, and providing a more predictable spray from the nozzles. In other embodiments, the spray unit is utilized in a spray system adaptable to service vehicles, and may be utilized in conjunction with a vegetation engagement device, such as a cutter to engage multiple zones of a roadway right-of-way. Additionally, an improved spray unit includes an electromagnetic field and an attractor to generate plate motion.

Claims (46)

1. A method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system, comprising:

providing a registration plate comprising at least one integral tab extending therefrom, wherein the tab includes an aperture therein;

providing a nozzle for placement into the aperture, wherein the tab provides a rigid mount for the coupling of the nozzle with the registration plate;

providing a fluid source in fluid communication with the nozzle, whereby a fluid passes from the fluid source to the nozzle and sprays therefrom; and

reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle thereby creating the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

2. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , comprising inducing motion into the registration plate thereby creating droplet separation as the fluid exits the nozzle.

3. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , wherein reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises moving the tab relative to the registration plate whereby the tab resides non-planar with the registration plate such that the tab directs the nozzle to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

4. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , wherein reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises bending the tab relative to the registration plate whereby the tab resides non-planar with the registration plate such that the tab directs the nozzle to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

5. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , wherein reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises twisting the tab relative to the registration plate whereby the tab resides non-planar with the registration plate such that the tab directs the nozzle to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

6. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , wherein reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises bending and twisting the tab relative to the registration plate whereby the tab resides non-planar with the registration plate such that the tab directs the nozzle to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

7. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , comprising:

providing a plurality of integral tabs extending from the registration plate in addition to the at least one integral tab, wherein each of the plurality of tabs includes an aperture therein;

providing a nozzle for placement into the apertures, wherein each of the plurality of tabs provides a rigid mount for the coupling of the nozzles with the registration plate;

providing a fluid source in fluid communication with the nozzles, whereby a fluid passes from the fluid source to the nozzles and sprays therefrom; and

reorienting the plurality of tabs to alter a spray pattern of the nozzles thereby creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system.

8. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 7 , wherein reorienting the plurality of tabs to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises moving each of the plurality of tabs relative to the registration plate whereby the tabs reside non-planar with the registration plate such that the tabs directs the nozzles to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

9. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 7 , wherein the plurality of tabs is disposed along an outer periphery of the registration plate.

10. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 7 , wherein the plurality of tabs is disposed along an inner periphery of the registration plate.

11. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 1 , comprising:

providing a second registration plate comprising at least one integral tab extending therefrom, wherein the tab includes an aperture therein;

providing a nozzle for placement into the aperture, wherein the tab provides a rigid mount for the coupling of the nozzle with the registration plate;

providing a fluid source in fluid communication with the nozzle, whereby a fluid passes from the fluid source to the nozzle and sprays therefrom; and

reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle thereby creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system.

12. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 11 , comprising inducing motion into the second registration plate thereby creating droplet separation as the fluid exits the nozzle.

13. The method of creating a desired spray pattern in a spray system according to claim 11 , wherein reorienting the tab to alter a spray pattern of the nozzle comprises moving the tab relative to the second registration plate whereby the tab resides non-planar with the second registration plate such that the tab directs the nozzle to provide spray coverage at a specific location thereby facilitating creation of the desired spray pattern in the spray system.

14. A method for a spray system, comprising:

providing a first frame adaptable to a service vehicle;

providing a second frame connected to the first frame;

providing a spray head frame connected with the second frame;

mounting a motion inducer to the spray head frame;

coupling a registration plate with the motion inducer;

coupling first and second nozzles with the registration plate;

mounting a first flow control unit on the second frame;

fluidly coupling the first flow control unit with a fluid source and the first and second nozzles;

delivering a fluid from the fluid source to the first and second nozzles when the first flow control unit is in an on position;

ceasing delivery of the fluid from the fluid source when the first flow control unit is in an off position;

inducing motion to the registration plate during the delivery of fluid to the first and second nozzles by the first flow control unit to create droplet separation as the fluid exits the first and second nozzles; and

isolating the first flow control unit from the motion induced to the registration plate due to the mounting of the first flow control unit on the second frame.

15. The method for a spray system according to claim 14 , comprising:

coupling third and fourth nozzles with the registration plate;

mounting a second flow control unit on the second frame;

fluidly coupling the second flow control unit with a fluid source and the third and fourth nozzles;

delivering a fluid from the fluid source to the third and fourth nozzles when the second flow control unit is in an on position;

ceasing delivery of the fluid when the second flow control unit is in an off position;

inducing motion to the registration plate during the delivery of fluid to the third and fourth nozzles by the second flow control unit to create droplet separation as the fluid exits the third and fourth nozzles; and
