Abstract

An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system produces an image of shear wave velocities by transmitting push pulses to generate shear waves. A plurality of tracking lines are transmitted and echoes received by a focusing beamformer adjacent to the location of the push pulses. The tracking lines are sampled in a time-interleaved manner. The echo data acquired along each tracking line is processed to determine the time of peak tissue displacement caused by the shear waves at points along the tracking line, and the times of peaks at adjacent tracking lines compared to compute a local shear wave velocity. The resultant map of shear wave velocity values is color-coded and displayed over an anatomical image of the region of interest.

Claims (33)

1. An ultrasound system for shearwave analysis, the system comprising:

an ultrasound array;

a beamformer in communication with the ultrasound array, the beamformer configured to:

transmit, via the ultrasound array, a plurality of push pulses into a target and along a push vector, each push pulse being focused at a different vertical depth of the push vector to generate a composite shearwave front, the composite shearwave front defining a length across the vertical depths and traveling through the tissue in a lateral direction;

transmit, via the ultrasound array, a plurality of tracking pulses adjacent to the push vector, the plurality of tracking pulses being spatially separated in the lateral direction;

receive, via the ultrasound array, echoes from A-lines on each side of each of the plurality of tracking pulses to sample movement of the composite shearwave front through the tissue in the lateral direction, wherein a plurality of A-lines are generated in response to each of the plurality of tracking pulses; and

a processor in communication with the beamformer, the processor configured to:

store tracking echo data generated from the echoes from the plurality of tracking pulses;

use the tracking echo data to detect one or more displacements of the composite shearwave front as the composite shearwave front moves through the tissue; and

determine one or more velocities of the composite shearwave front based on the detected displacements.

2. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of tracking pulses are spatially separated in a uniform manner in the lateral direction.

3. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of tracking pulses are configured to at least penetrate the length of the composite shearwave front.

4. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasound array is comprised in a probe.

5. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the target is tissue.

6. The ultrasound system of claim 5 , wherein the tissue is breast tissue.

7. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein at least four A-lines are generated in response to each of the plurality of tracking pulses.

8. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the plurality of tracking pulses are spaced 2 mm apart in the lateral direction.

9. The ultrasound system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to display the velocities of the composite shearwave front to a user interface.

10. The ultrasound system of claim 9 , wherein the velocities are displayed in a color map.

11. A method for shearwave analysis, the method comprising:

transmitting, via an ultrasound array, a plurality of push pulses into a target and along a push vector, each push pulse being focused at a different vertical depth of the push vector to generate a composite shearwave front, the composite shearwave front defining a length across the vertical depths and traveling through the tissue in a lateral direction;

transmitting, via the ultrasound array, a plurality of tracking pulses adjacent to the push vector, the plurality of tracking pulses being spatially separated in the lateral direction;

receiving, via the ultrasound array, echoes from A-lines on each side of each of the plurality of tracking pulses to sample movement of the composite shearwave front through the tissue in the lateral direction, wherein a plurality of A-lines are generated in response to each of the plurality of tracking pulses;

generating tracking echo data generated from the echoes from the plurality of tracking pulses;

using the tracking echo data to detect one or more displacements of the composite shearwave front as the composite shearwave front moves through the tissue;

determining one or more velocities of the composite shearwave front based on the detected displacements.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of tracking pulses are spatially separated in a uniform manner in the lateral direction.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of tracking pulses are configured to at least penetrate the length of the composite shearwave front.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the ultrasound array is comprised in a probe.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the target is tissue.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the tissue is breast tissue.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least four A-lines are generated by each of the plurality of tracking pulses.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least two of the plurality of tracking pulses are spaced 2 mm apart in the lateral direction.
