Abstract

A device for fastening tissue includes (a) a shaft extending longitudinally from a distal end insertable into a body to a proximal end attached to a controller which remains outside of the body, the shaft including a lumen extending therethrough and an opening extending through a wall of a distal portion thereof to open the lumen to an exterior of the shaft; (b) a first roller housed within the lumen adjacent to a first longitudinal edge of the opening such that a rotation of the first roller grasps and draws tissue from the body into the lumen in combination; and (c) a fastening element housed within the lumen adjacent to the opening and movable from a tissue receiving configuration to a tissue gripping configuration.

Claims (14)

1. A method for closing a tissue opening, comprising the steps of:

inserting into a living body a distal portion of a shaft and positioning an tissue receiving opening extending through a wall of the shaft adjacent to the tissue opening, the shaft extending longitudinally from a distal end to a proximal end attached to a controller which remains outside of the body, the shaft including a lumen extending therethrough, wherein the shaft includes first and second rollers positioned adjacent to one another and extending within the tissue receiving opening, further comprising the step of rotating the first and second rollers toward one another so that radially outer surfaces of the first and second rollers grip the tissue edges to draw the tissue edges into the lumen;

drawing edges of the tissue opening through the tissue receiving opening into the lumen; and

moving a fastening element housed within the lumen along the longitudinal axis of the lumen over the tissue edges received in the lumen to hold the tissue edges against one another.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second rollers have outer surfaces mated to one another such that the tissue edges drawn therebetween into the tissue receiving opening are shaped into folds along a length thereof.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the fastening element is a needle including a filament moved distally along the longitudinal axis of the lumen from a first configuration in which the needle is proximal of the opening to a second configuration in which the needle extends distally across at least a portion of the opening such that the needle passes through the tissue edges.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the filament is composed of at least one of a biocompatible and a bioresorbable material.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the filament includes a locking element to hold the filament within the tissue edges.

6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising the step of inserting a cutting tool into the lumen configured to cut the filament after the tissue edges are secured.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the folds are in a sinusoidal pattern along a length of each of the first and second rollers.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein peaks of the first roller correspond to troughs of the second roller to grip the tissue edges.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of drawing tissue into the lumen includes applying a vacuum force through the lumen of the shaft to draw the target tissue through the tissue receiving opening.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of drawing tissue into the lumen includes extending at least one of the first and second rollers past the tissue receiving opening to grip the tissue edges and draw the tissue edges through the tissue receiving opening.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outer surfaces of the first and second rollers include tissue gripping features.
