Abstract

Fiber optic connectors comprising compact footprints along with cable assemblies and methods for making the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, the optical connector comprises a housing and a ferrule. The housing comprises a longitudinal passageway between a rear end and a front end. The optical connectors disclosed may be tunable for improving optical performance and may include a spring for biasing the ferrule to a forward position as desired.

Claims (127)

1. A fiber optic connector, comprising:

a housing configured as a one-piece component comprising a rear end and a front end with a longitudinal passageway extending from the rear end to the front end, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region integrally-formed as part of the housing and disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion, and the threaded portion extends from the non-round cross-section to the round cross-section; and

a ferrule comprising a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end.

2. The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion is adjacent to a keying feature.

3. The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , wherein the front portion of housing comprises another cross-section portion.

4. The fiber optic connector of claim 3 , wherein the another cross-section portion comprises a SC footprint.

5. The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule is a portion of a ferrule subassembly, and an opening at the front end or the rear end of the housing is sized for receiving a portion of the ferrule subassembly.

6. The fiber optic connector of claim 5 , wherein the ferrule subassembly is configured to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule subassembly with respect to the housing.

7. The fiber optic connector of claim 5 , wherein the ferrule subassembly comprises a ferrule carrier or a ferrule holder.

8. The fiber optic connector of claim 7 , further comprising a resilient member, and wherein the ferrule carrier further comprises a resilient member pocket.

9. The fiber optic connector of claim 8 , wherein the resilient member pocket is configured for receiving the resilient member in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction of the ferrule carrier.

The fiber optic connector of claim 7 , wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier rear end, a ferrule carrier front end and a ferrule carrier passageway extending from the ferrule carrier rear end to the ferrule carrier front end, wherein the ferrule carrier passageway comprises a fiber buckling zone.

11. The fiber optic connector of claim 7 , wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising at least a first cantilevered portion.

The fiber optic connector of claim 11 , wherein the at least one of the first cantilevered portion is configured to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the housing when the ferrule subassembly is fully-seated in the housing, and allows rotation of the ferrule for tuning when the ferrule subassembly is not seated in the housing.

13. The fiber optic connector of claim 7 , wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising a first cantilevered portion and a second cantilevered portion.

The fiber optic connector of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion are configured to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the housing when the ferrule subassembly is fully-seated in the housing, and allow rotation of the ferrule for tuning when the ferrule subassembly is not seating in the housing.

15. The fiber optic connector of claim 13 , wherein ferrule carrier front end is sized to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the ferrule carrier when the ferrule carrier front end is fully-seated in the housing.

16. The fiber optic connector of claim 13 , one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion comprising a ferrule retention structure.

The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , the ferrule being a portion of a ferrule subassembly that further comprises a ferrule carrier, the ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier rear end, a ferrule carrier front end and a ferrule carrier passageway extending from the ferrule carrier rear end to the ferrule carrier front end, wherein the ferrule carrier passageway comprises a fiber buckling zone.

18. The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , the ferrule being a portion of a ferrule subassembly, wherein the ferrule subassembly further comprises a ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising at least a first cantilevered portion.

The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , the ferrule being a portion of a ferrule subassembly, wherein the ferrule subassembly further comprises a ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising a first cantilevered portion and a second cantilevered portion.

20. The fiber optic connector of claim 5 , wherein the ferrule subassembly comprises a ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising a first cantilevered portion, a second cantilevered portion and a resilient member pocket.

21. The fiber optic connector of claim 19 , at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion comprising a ferrule retention structure.

22. The fiber optic connector of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule is tunable relative to the housing.

23. The fiber optic connector of claim 5 , wherein the ferrule is tunable within the ferrule subassembly.

24. The fiber optic connector of claim 22 , wherein the ferrule is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

25. The fiber optic connector of claim 7 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable relative to the housing.

26. The fiber optic connector of claim 25 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

27. A fiber optic connector, comprising:

a housing configured as a one-piece component comprising a rear end and a front end with a longitudinal passageway extending from the rear end to the front end, and an opening at the rear end of the housing, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion integrally-formed as part of the housing; and

a ferrule subassembly, wherein the opening at the rear end of the housing is sized for receiving a portion of the ferrule subassembly, the ferrule subassembly comprising:

a ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising at least a first cantilevered portion; and

a ferrule comprising a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end.

28. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule subassembly is sized to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the ferrule carrier when the ferrule subassembly is fully-seated into the housing.

29. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the at least one first cantilevered portion is configured to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the housing when the ferrule subassembly is fully-seated in the housing, and allow rotation of the ferrule for tuning when the ferrule subassembly is not seating in the housing.

30. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule carrier front end further comprises a second cantilevered portion.

31. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , further comprising a resilient member, and wherein the ferrule carrier further comprises a resilient member pocket.

32. The fiber optic connector of claim 30 , wherein the resilient member pocket is disposed between the first cantilevered portion and the second cantilevered portion.

33. The fiber optic connector of claim 31 , wherein the resilient member pocket is configured for receiving the resilient member in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction of the ferrule carrier.

34. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier rear end and a ferrule carrier passageway extending from the ferrule carrier rear end to the ferrule carrier front end, wherein the ferrule carrier passageway comprises a fiber buckling zone.

35. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein ferrule carrier front end is sized to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the ferrule carrier when the ferrule carrier front end is fully-seated into the housing.

36. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion comprising a ferrule retention structure.

37. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule is tunable relative to the housing.

38. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule is tunable within the ferrule subassembly.

39. The fiber optic connector of claim 37 , wherein the ferrule is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

40. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable relative to the housing.

41. The fiber optic connector of claim 40 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

42. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the threaded portion is adjacent to a keying feature.

43. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the non-round cross-section comprises a rectangular cross-section comprising rounded corners.

44. The fiber optic connector of claim 27 , wherein the front portion of housing comprises another cross-section portion.

45. The fiber optic connector of claim 44 , wherein the another cross-section portion comprises a SC footprint.

46. A fiber optic connector, comprising:

a housing configured as a one-piece component comprising a rear end and a front end with a longitudinal passageway extending from the rear end to the front end, and an opening at the rear end of the housing, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion integrally-formed as part of the housing; and

a ferrule subassembly, wherein the opening at the rear end of the housing is sized for receiving a portion of the ferrule subassembly, the ferrule subassembly comprising:

a ferrule carrier comprising a ferrule carrier front end, the ferrule carrier front end comprising a first cantilevered portion, a second cantilevered portion, and a resilient member pocket disposed between the first cantilevered portion and the second cantilevered portion;

a resilient member; and

a ferrule comprising a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end.

47. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule carrier front end is sized to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the ferrule carrier when the ferrule carrier front end is fully-seated into the housing.

48. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein one of the first cantilevered portion and the second cantilevered portion are configured to cooperate with the housing for inhibiting the rotation of the ferrule with respect to the housing when the ferrule subassembly is fully-seated into the housing, and allowing rotation of the ferrule for tuning when the ferrule subassembly is not seated into the housing.

49. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the resilient member pocket is configured for receiving the resilient member in a direction transverse to a longitudinal direction of the ferrule carrier.

50. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier rear end, and a ferrule carrier passageway extending from the ferrule carrier rear end to the ferrule carrier front end, wherein the ferrule carrier passageway comprises a fiber buckling zone.

51. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion comprising a ferrule retention structure.

52. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule is tunable relative to the housing.

53. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule is tunable within the ferrule subassembly.

54. The fiber optic connector of claim 52 , wherein the ferrule is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

55. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable relative to the housing.

56. The fiber optic connector of claim 55 , wherein the ferrule carrier is tunable through an angle of ±180 degrees.

57. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the threaded portion extends from the non-round cross-section to the round cross-section.

58. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the threaded portion is adjacent to a keying feature.

59. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the front portion of housing comprises another cross-section portion.

60. The fiber optic connector of claim 59 , wherein the another cross-section portion comprises a SC footprint.

61. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , the housing further comprises a locking feature.

62. The fiber optic connector of claim 61 , wherein the locking feature is a groove, shoulder, a ramp with a ledge, or a scallop formed in the housing.

63. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the housing comprises at least one adhesive fill opening.

64. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , the ferrule comprising at least one selectively tunable surface, wherein the selectively tunable surface allows the ferrule to have a plurality of rotational positions relative to the housing.

65. The fiber optic connector of claim 64 , wherein the selectively tunable surface is formed by a plurality of planar surfaces on the ferrule.

66. The fiber optic connector of claim 64 , the selectively tunable surface formed by a plurality of planar surfaces that are recessed on the ferrule.

67. The fiber optic connector of claim 64 , wherein the selectively tunable surface of the ferrule is disposed adjacent to a free rotation portion of the ferrule, thereby allowing rotation of the ferrule for tuning during assembly.

68. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the threaded portion comprises less than three threads.

69. The fiber optic connector of claim 68 , wherein the less than three threads are continuous.

70. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , further comprising an O-ring.

71. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , further comprising a dust cap.

72. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , the ferrule sub-assembly further comprising a cable adapter.

73. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 , wherein the ferrule cooperates directly with the ferrule carrier without using a ferrule holder.

74. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 being a portion of a cable assembly.

75. The fiber optic connector of claim 46 being a portion of a distribution cable.

76. A method of making a fiber optic connector, comprising:

placing an optical fiber into a ferrule wherein the ferrule comprises a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end;

placing the ferrule into a ferrule carrier, wherein the ferrule carrier comprises a ferrule carrier front end comprising at least a first cantilevered portion;

inserting the ferrule carrier into an opening at a rear end of the housing, wherein the housing is configured as a one-piece component and cooperates with the front end of the ferrule carrier to inhibit rotation of the ferrule when the ferrule carrier is fully seated in the housing, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion integrally-formed as part of the housing.

77. The method of claim 76 , wherein the ferrule carrier front end further comprises a second cantilevered portion.

78. The method of claim 77 , the step of placing the ferrule into the ferrule carrier causing at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion to deflect.

79. The method of claim 76 , wherein at least one of the first cantilevered portion comprises a ferrule retention structure.

80. The method of claim 76 , further comprising placing a resilient member into a resilient member pocket of the ferrule carrier.

81. The method of claim 76 , further comprising a step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule relative to the ferrule carrier.

82. The method of claim 76 , wherein the ferrule carrier is a portion of a ferrule subassembly.

83. The method of claim 82 , further comprising a step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule subassembly relative to the housing.

84. The method of claim 82 , wherein the ferrule subassembly further comprises a cable adapter.

85. The method of claim 84 , wherein the step of tuning the ferrule comprises rotating the ferrule carrier relative to the cable adapter.

86. A method of making a fiber optic connector, comprising:

placing an optical fiber into a ferrule wherein the ferrule comprises a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end;

placing the ferrule into a ferrule subassembly, the ferrule subassembly comprising a ferrule carrier having a ferrule carrier front end, wherein the ferrule carrier front end comprises at least a first cantilevered portion;

tuning the ferrule;

inserting the ferrule subassembly into an opening at a rear end of the housing, wherein the housing is configured as a one-piece component and cooperates with the front end of the ferrule carrier to inhibit rotation of the ferrule when the ferrule subassembly is fully seated in the housing, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion integrally-formed as part of the housing.

87. The method of claim 86 , wherein the ferrule carrier front end further comprises a second cantilevered portion.

88. The method of claim 87 , the step of placing the ferrule into the ferrule carrier causing at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion to deflect.

89. The method of claim 86 , wherein the at least one of the first cantilevered portion comprises a ferrule retention structure.

90. The method of claim 86 , further comprising placing a resilient member into a resilient member pocket of the ferrule carrier.

91. The method of claim 86 , the step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule relative to the ferrule carrier.

92. The method of claim 86 , the step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule subassembly relative to the housing.

93. The method of claim 86 , wherein the ferrule subassembly further comprises a cable adapter.

94. The method of claim 93 , wherein the step of tuning the ferrule comprises rotating the ferrule carrier relative to the cable adapter.

95. A method of making a fiber optic connector, comprising:

placing an optical fiber into a ferrule, wherein the ferrule comprises a fiber bore extending from a rear end to a front end;

placing the ferrule into a ferrule subassembly, the ferrule subassembly comprising a ferrule carrier having a ferrule carrier front end, a resilient member and a cable adapter, wherein the ferrule carrier front end comprises a first cantilevered portion and a second cantilevered portion;

tuning the ferrule; and

inserting the ferrule subassembly into an opening at a rear end of the housing, wherein the housing is configured as a one-piece component and cooperates with the front end of the ferrule carrier to inhibit rotation of the ferrule when the ferrule subassembly is fully seated in the housing, wherein a part of a rear portion of the housing comprises a round cross-section and a part of a front portion of the housing comprises a non-round cross-section with a transition region disposed between the rear portion and the front portion, wherein the transition region comprises a threaded portion integrally-formed as part of the housing.

96. The method of claim 95 , the step of placing the ferrule into the ferrule carrier causing at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion to deflect.

97. The method of claim 95 , wherein at least one of the first cantilevered portion or the second cantilevered portion comprises a ferrule retention structure.

98. The method of claim 95 , further comprising placing the resilient member into a resilient member pocket of the ferrule carrier in a direction that is transverse to a longitudinal direction of the ferrule carrier.

99. The method of claim 95 , the step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule relative to the ferrule carrier.

100. The method of claim 95 , the step of tuning the ferrule comprising rotating the ferrule subassembly relative to the housing.

101. The method of claim 95 , wherein the step of tuning the ferrule comprises rotating the ferrule carrier relative to the cable adapter.

102. The method of claim 95 , wherein the housing comprises at least one adhesive fill opening, and an adhesive is placed into the housing through the at least one adhesive fill opening.

103. The method of claim 95 , further comprising placing at least one O-ring on the housing.

104. The method of claim 95 , wherein the fiber optic connector is a portion of a distribution cable.

105. The method of claim 95 , wherein the ferrule cooperates directly with the ferrule carrier without using a ferrule holder.
