Abstract

A honeycomb body having a porous ceramic honeycomb structure with a first end, a second end, and a plurality of walls having wall surfaces defining a plurality of inner channels. A highly porous layer is disposed on one or more of the wall surfaces of the honeycomb body. The highly porous layer has a porosity greater than 90%, and has an average thickness of greater than or equal to 0.5 μm and less than or equal to 10 μm. A method of making a honeycomb body includes depositing a layer precursor on a ceramic honeycomb body and binding the layer precursor to the ceramic honeycomb body to form the highly porous layer.

Claims (27)

1. A method of evaluating filtration performance of a plugged honeycomb body comprised of porous walls, the method comprising:

introducing a gas stream into the honeycomb body, the gas stream being comprised of a gas and soot particles,

measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body,

wherein the measuring comprises measuring a particle count with using a particle counter, and

wherein the soot particles have a median particle size of about 300 nm.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas stream at the inlet to the honeycomb body has a soot particle concentration of 500,000 particles/cm 3 .

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at a flow rate of 51 Nm 3 /h.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at a velocity of 1.7 m/s.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body for one minute.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at a velocity of 1.7 m/s for one minute.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the difference between the inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and the outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body are measured after 1 minute of gas flow.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the measuring comprises measuring a particle count with using a 0.1 CFM particle counter.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at room temperature.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at a velocity of 1.7 m/s for one minute.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein, after measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body with a gas flow of 51 Nm 3 /h for one minute at room temperature, the method further comprises exposing the plugged honeycomb body to air flow at 850 Nm 3 /h of air for one minute at room temperature (“high flow condition”).

12. The method of claim 11 wherein, after the plugged honeycomb body is exposed to air flow at 850 Nm 3 /h of air for one minute at room temperature, the method further comprises introducing a gas stream comprised of a gas and soot particles have a median particle size of about 300 nm at a flow rate of 51 Nm 3 /h, room temperature, and a velocity of 1.7 m/s for one minute, and measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body.

13. A method of evaluating filtration performance of a plugged honeycomb body comprised of porous walls, the method comprising:

introducing a gas stream into the honeycomb body, the gas stream being comprised of a gas and soot particles,

measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body,

wherein the gas is flowed through the honeycomb body at room temperature, and

wherein the soot particles have a median particle size of about 300 nm.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the gas stream at the inlet to the honeycomb body has a soot particle concentration of 500,000 particles/cm 3 .

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the difference between the inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and the outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body are measured after 1 minute of gas flow.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the measuring comprises measuring a particle count with using a particle counter.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the measuring comprises measuring a particle count with using a 0.1 CFM particle counter.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein, after measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body with a gas flow of 51 Nm 3 /h for one minute at room temperature, the method further comprises exposing the plugged honeycomb body to air flow at 850 Nm 3 /h of air for one minute at room temperature (“high flow condition”).

19. The method of claim 18 wherein, after the plugged honeycomb body is exposed to air flow at 850 Nm 3 /h of air for one minute at room temperature, the method further comprises introducing a gas stream comprised of a gas and soot particles have a median particle size of about 300 nm at a flow rate of 51 Nm 3 /h, room temperature, and a velocity of 1.7 m/s for one minute, and measuring the difference between an inlet number of the soot particles that are introduced into the honeycomb body and an outlet number of the soot particles that exit the honeycomb body.
