Abstract

A device charging system including a battery module and a central charging station. The battery module is configured to supply a type of power to at least one load device. The central charging station is in communication with the battery module. The central charging station includes an electronic processor configured to define a virtual boundary, determine a location of the battery module, determine, based the location of the battery module, whether the battery module is within the virtual boundary, and transmit a command to the battery module causing the battery module to stop supplying power to the load device when the battery module is not within the virtual boundary.

Claims (60)

1. A device charging system comprising:

a battery module configured to supply a type of power to at least one load device, the battery module having an identifier; and

a central charging station in communication with the battery module, the central charging station including a locking mechanism configured to engage a receiver cavity of the battery module to the central charging station when the battery module is coupled to the central charging station and an electronic processor configured to:

receive the identifier from the battery module,

determine if the identifier is stored in a memory of the central charging station,

charge the battery module when the battery module is coupled to the central charging station if the identifier is stored in the memory,

generate an alert if the identifier is not stored in memory,

receive an input from a user,

authenticate the input,

unlock the battery module upon authenticating the input,

define a virtual boundary,

determine a location of the battery module,

determine, based the location of the battery module, whether the battery module is within the virtual boundary, and

transmit a command to the battery module causing the battery module to stop supplying power to the load device when the battery module is not within the virtual boundary.

2. The device charging system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to add and remove additional battery modules to the device charging system.

3. The device charging system of claim 1 , wherein the type of power supplied to the at least one load device is transferred wirelessly.

4. The device charging system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to supply a second type of power to a second load device.

5. The device charging system of claim 4 , wherein the second type of power is difference from the type of power supplied to the at least one load device.

6. The device charging system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to supply power to the battery module via a proprietary charging interface.

7. A method of monitoring a battery module supplying power to at least one load device within a charging system, the method comprising:

receiving an identifier from the battery module, the identifier associated with the battery module;

determining if the identifier is stored in a memory of the charging system;

charging the battery module when the battery module is coupled to the charging system if the identifier is stored in the memory;

generating an alert if the identifier is not stored in memory;

receiving an input from a user;

authenticating the input;

unlocking the battery module from the charging system upon authenticating the input, wherein unlocking the battery module includes disengaging a locking mechanism of the charging system from a receiver cavity of the battery module;

defining a virtual boundary;

determining a location of the battery module;

determining, based the location of the battery module, whether the battery module is within the virtual boundary; and

transmitting a command to the battery module causing the battery module to stop supplying power to the load device when the battery module is not within the virtual boundary.

8. The method of claim 7 , the method further comprising adding or removing an additional battery module to the charging system.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein a type of power supplied to the at least one load device is transferred wirelessly.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the battery module is configured to supply a second type of power to a second load device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second type of power is difference from a type of power supplied to the at least one load device.

12. The method of claim 7 further comprising supplying power to the battery module via a proprietary charging interface.

13. A device charging system comprising:

a battery module configured to supply a type of power to at least one load device, the battery module having an identifier; and

a central charging station in communication with the battery module, the central charging station including

a memory configured to store a plurality of identifiers associated with a plurality of battery modules,

an output port configured to supply power to the battery module; and

an electronic processor configured to:

determine if the identifier of the battery module coupled to the output port is one of the plurality of identifiers stored in the memory,

charge the battery module when the battery module is coupled to the output port and if the identifier of the battery module coupled to the output port is one of the plurality of identifiers stored in the memory,

generate an alert if the identifier of the battery module coupled to the output port is not one of the plurality of identifiers stored in the memory,

receive an input from a user,

authenticate the input,

unlock the battery module upon authenticating the input wherein unlocking the battery module includes disengaging a locking mechanism of the charging system from a receiver cavity of the battery module,

determine when the battery module is removed from the central charging station and is no longer coupled to the output port,

define a virtual boundary in which the battery module is expected to stay in,

determine a location of the battery module,

determine, based the location of the battery module, whether the battery module is within the virtual boundary, and

transmit a command to the battery module causing the battery module to stop supplying power to the load device when the battery module is not within the virtual boundary.

14. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to add and remove identifiers of additional battery modules to the memory of the central charging station.

15. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the central charging station further includes a secondary sensor configured to read an identification label of the battery module to determine when the battery module is coupled to the output port.

16. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the type of power supplied to the at least one load device is transferred wirelessly.

17. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the battery module is configured to supply a second type of power to a second load device.

18. The device charging system of claim 17 , wherein the second type of power is difference from the type of power supplied to the at least one load device.

19. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to supply power to the battery module via a proprietary charging interface.

20. The device charging system of claim 13 , wherein the electronic processor is further configured to determine a potential malfunction in the battery module by monitoring an electronic charge characteristic of the battery module while the battery module is being charged and, when the potential malfunction is determined to exist, generate an alert to a user of the device charging system.
