Abstract

A vascular occlusion device having an expandable frame that carries a membrane. The membrane can include a tubular portion configured to transition between an open configuration in which the tubular portion is configured to receive a guidewire and a closed configuration in which the tubular portion is configured to occlude blood flow.

Claims (38)

1. A method of occluding a vessel, the method comprising:

advancing a delivery system over a guidewire in the vessel, the delivery system carrying an occlusion device, the occlusion device comprising:

an expandable frame comprising a first lobe and a second lobe separated by a neck portion, the second lobe comprising a concave configuration which is concave in a direction away from the first lobe, the neck portion extending from a tapered portion of the first lobe to a tapered portion of the second lobe, the neck portion forming a guidewire opening through which the guidewire extends; and

a membrane comprising a covering portion carried by at least the second lobe, the membrane comprising a tubular portion inverted from the covering portion and extending at least partially through the second lobe, the tubular portion comprising a lumen through which the guidewire extends, the tubular portion extending further through the second lobe than the first lobe as the delivery system is being advanced;

deploying the occlusion device; and

removing the delivery system and the guidewire, the tubular portion continuing to extend through the second lobe as the guidewire is removed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tubular portion is configured to occlude blood flowing at a pressure between about 20 mmHg and about 120 mmHg.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising after removing the guidewire, transitioning the tubular portion from an open configuration in which the tubular portion is configured to receive the guidewire to a closed configuration in which the tubular portion occludes blood flow.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to deploying the occlusion device, partially deploying the first lobe of the occlusion device.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising injecting contrast media to confirm a position of the first lobe.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising retracting the occlusion device when the first lobe of the occlusion device is not positioned correctly.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein when deploying the occlusion device, the occlusion device exhibits less than 15 percent elongation.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein when advancing the delivery system, the delivery system forms an interference fit with interfacing features at an end of the expandable frame.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein deploying the occlusion device comprises releasing an interlocking attachment between the occlusion device and the delivery system.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tubular portion only extends through the second lobe as the delivery system is being advanced.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first lobe and the second lobe are connected through the neck portion by a plurality of struts that incline radially outwardly away from the neck portion.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering drug through a lumen of the delivery system.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tubular portion is integral with the membrane.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the tubular portion is integrally formed with the membrane by electrospun fibers.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first lobe remains uncovered by the membrane.

16. A method of occluding a vessel, the method comprising:

advancing a delivery system over a guidewire in the vessel, the delivery system comprising an outer catheter and an inner catheter extending through the outer catheter, the inner catheter carrying an occlusion device, the occlusion device comprising:

an expandable frame comprising a guidewire opening through which the guidewire extends; and

a membrane carried by the expandable frame, the membrane comprising a tubular portion extending in a first direction from an anchored end to a free end, the tubular portion comprising a lumen through which the guidewire and the inner catheter extend, the tubular portion extending in the first direction as the delivery system is being advanced;

deploying the occlusion device; and

removing the inner catheter and the guidewire from the tubular portion and causing the tubular portion to collapse at a position between the anchored end and the free end, the tubular portion continuing to extend in the first direction as the guidewire and the inner catheter are removed.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first direction is an upstream direction.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the expandable frame comprises a first lobe and a second lobe separated by a neck portion, the second lobe comprising a concave configuration which is concave in a direction away from the first lobe, the neck portion forming the guidewire opening through which the guidewire extends.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the membrane is carried by at least the second lobe.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the tubular portion extends at least partially through the second lobe as the delivery system is being advanced.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising after removing the inner catheter, transitioning the tubular portion from an open configuration in which the tubular portion is configured to receive the inner catheter to a closed configuration in which the tubular portion occludes blood flow.

22. The method of claim 16 , further comprising, prior to deploying the occlusion device, partially deploying a portion of the occlusion device.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising injecting contrast media to confirm a position of the occlusion device.

24. The method of claim 22 , further comprising retracting the occlusion device when the partially deployed portion of the occlusion device is not positioned correctly.

25. The method of claim 16 , wherein when advancing the delivery system, the delivery system forms an interference fit with interfacing features at an end of the expandable frame.

26. The method of claim 16 , wherein deploying the occlusion device comprises releasing an interlocking attachment between the occlusion device and the delivery system.

27. The method of claim 16 , further comprising delivering drug through a lumen of the delivery system.

28. The method of claim 16 , wherein the inner catheter is configured to maintain the lumen of the tubular portion in an open configuration without the guidewire.
