Abstract

A system and methods are provided for a suspension system of an off-road vehicle that allows the springs to be mounted remotely, in any location on the vehicle, enabling the use of spring sizes, spring rates, motion ratios, and damping profiles that would be impractical with traditional suspensions. The suspension system includes a hydraulic cylinder coupled between the wheel and the chassis, in lieu of a conventional spring. This cylinder is in fluid communication with another cylinder by way of a hydraulic hose. This second cylinder includes a piston that presses against a suspension spring that is in contact with a fixed spring stop, thus transferring spring forces to the wheel. Alternatively, the spring stop may comprise a control actuator that moves according to signals from an onboard computer control system, enabling active control over spring load and chassis attitude.

Claims (18)

1. A suspension system for an off-road vehicle, the suspension system comprising:

a hydraulic wheel cylinder for communicating forces on a wheel to a spring cylinder;

a piston comprising the spring cylinder for communicating the forces to a spring; and

a spring stop for fixating the spring with respect to the spring cylinder wherein the spring stop comprises a control actuator that is configured to press a piston against the spring in opposition to the piston.

2. The suspension system of claim 1 , wherein the control actuator is configured to operate according to electronic signals received from a suitable computer control system onboard the vehicle.

3. A suspension system for an off-road vehicle, the suspension system comprising:

a hydraulic wheel cylinder coupled between each wheel and a chassis of the vehicle;

a spring cylinder in fluid communication with each hydraulic wheel cylinder;

a piston comprising each spring cylinder and in mechanical communication with a spring; and

a spring stop for fixating each spring with respect to its associated spring cylinder wherein the spring stop comprises a control actuator that is configured to press a piston against the spring.

4. The suspension system of claim 3 , wherein each spring stop comprises a control actuator that is configured to press a piston against the spring in opposition to the piston comprising the spring cylinder.

5. The suspension system of claim 4 , wherein the control actuator is configured to operate according to electronic signals received from a suitable computer control system onboard the vehicle, such that signaling the control actuator to extend the piston against the spring add spring force to the suspension systems and retracting the piston removes spring force from the suspension system.

6. The suspension system of claim 5 , wherein the control actuators and the computer control system are configured to control individual spring forces applied to each of the wheels of the vehicle.

7. The suspension system of claim 6 , wherein the control actuators and the computer control system are configured to raise the vehicle so as to provide greater ground clearance.

8. The suspension system of claim 6 , wherein the control actuators and the computer control system are configured to counteract changes in weight and weight distribution of the vehicle.

9. The suspension system of claim 6 , wherein the control actuators and the computer control system are configured to enhance handling of the vehicle by counteracting any one or more of chassis roll, chassis pitch, and chassis twisting due to engine torque or aerodynamic loads.

10. The suspension system of claim 6 , wherein a driver control interface is disposed within a cockpit of the vehicle and configured to enable a driver of the vehicle to provide real-time inputs into the computer control system for the purpose of affecting the handling of the vehicle.

11. The suspension system of claim 10 , wherein the computer control system includes an emergency function configured to enable occupants within the vehicle to declare an emergency situation to the computer control system by way of the driver control interface, the emergency function configured to cause the computer control system to automatically perform any of various responsive actions.
