Abstract

A first base station receives, from a second base station, a first message comprising a context of a wireless device. The first base station sends a radio resource control (RRC) message to the wireless device. The first base station determines that reception of the RRC message by the wireless device has failed. The first base station sends, to the second base station and based on the determining, a second message indicating that a connection setup with the wireless device has failed.

Claims (50)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a first base station from a second base station, a first message comprising a context of a wireless device;

sending, by the first base station, a radio resource control (RRC) message to the wireless device;

determining, by the first base station, that reception of the RRC message by the wireless device has failed; and

sending, by the first base station to the second base station and based on the determining, a second message indicating that a connection setup with the wireless device has failed, wherein the second message comprises downlink data for the wireless device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the first base station from the wireless device, a first RRC message indicating a request to resume an RRC connection between the wireless device and the first base station.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the RRC message sent to the wireless device is a second RRC message that is based on the receiving of the first RRC message.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending, by the first base station to the second base station, before the receiving the first message comprising the context of the wireless device, a request message comprising a request to retrieve the context of the wireless device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the request message comprises one or more of:

uplink data of the wireless device; and

release assistance information (RAI) of the wireless device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first message comprises the downlink data for the wireless device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the RRC message is:

an RRC resume message comprising the downlink data; or

an RRC release message comprising the downlink data.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second message comprises the context of the wireless device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second message comprises a cause value indicating:

a failure to transmit an RRC message to the wireless device; or

a failure to receive an RRC response message from the wireless device.

10. A first base station comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first base station to:

receive, from a second base station, a first message comprising a context of a wireless device;

send a radio resource control (RRC) message to the wireless device;

determine that reception of the RRC message by the wireless device has failed; and

send, to the second base station and based on the determining, a second message indicating that a connection setup with the wireless device has failed, wherein the second message comprises downlink data for the wireless device.

11. The first base station of claim 10 , wherein the instructions further cause the first base station to receive, from the wireless device, a first RRC message indicating a request to resume an RRC connection between the wireless device and the first base station.

12. The first base station of claim 11 , wherein the RRC message sent to the wireless device is a second RRC message that is based on the receiving of the first RRC message.

13. The first base station of claim 10 , wherein the instructions further cause the first base station to send, to the second base station, before the receiving the first message comprising the context of the wireless device, a request message comprising a request to retrieve the context of the wireless device.

14. The first base station of claim 13 , wherein the request message comprises one or more of:

uplink data of the wireless device; and

release assistance information (RAI) of the wireless device.

15. The first base station of claim 10 , wherein the first message comprises the downlink data for the wireless device.

16. The first base station of claim 15 , wherein the RRC message is:

an RRC resume message comprising the downlink data; or

an RRC release message comprising the downlink data.

17. The first base station of claim 10 , wherein the second message comprises the context of the wireless device.

18. A system comprising:

a first base station comprising:

one or more first processors; and

first memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more first processors, cause the first base station to:

receive, from a second base station, a first message comprising a context of a wireless device;

send a radio resource control (RRC) message to the wireless device;

determine that reception of the RRC message by the wireless device has failed; and

send, to the second base station and based on the determining, a second message indicating that a connection setup with the wireless device has failed wherein the second message comprises downlink data for the wireless device; and

the second base station, wherein the second base station comprises:

one or more second processors; and

second memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more second processors, cause the second base station to:

send the first message; and

receive the second message.
