Abstract

Eyewear having a frame, a hinge, and a hyperextendable temple. An extender is coupled to the hinge and the temple, and the extender extends with respect to the hinge allowing hyperextension of the temple with respect to the frame. A cam is configured to leverage the temple away from the frame during hyperextension and reduce wear. A cosmetic trim may include a recess that receives a protrusion of the frame in the open position, and which protrusion moves out of the recess during hyperextension and creates the cam.

Claims (29)

1. Eyewear, comprising:

a frame;

an optical member supported by the frame;

a temple;

a hinge coupled between the frame and the temple, the hinge configured to allow rotation of the temple with respect to the frame;

an extender coupled to the temple and configured to allow the temple to extend away from the hinge to a hyperextended position; and

a cam configured to leverage the temple away from the frame in the hyperextended position, wherein the cam is formed by a protrusion interposed between the temple and the frame; and

a cosmetic trim cap coupled to the temple and including a recess.

2. The eyewear of claim 1 , wherein the cam is configured to create a gap between the frame and the temple when the temple is hyperextended.

3. The eyewear of claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is positioned in the recess when the temple is in an open position, and wherein the protrusion is removed from the recess in the hyperextended position.

4. The eyewear of claim 3 , wherein the protrusion is configured to slide out of the recess when the temple rotates to the hyperextended position.

5. The eyewear of claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is elongated, and the recess is elongated to guide the temple away from the frame in the hyperextended position to a predetermined angle.

6. The eyewear of claim 1 , wherein the extender comprises an extension member coupled to the hinge, wherein the temple is configured to extend along the extension member when extended to the hyperextended position.

7. The eyewear of claim 6 , further comprising a limit member configured to limit a travel distance of the temple along the extension member.

8. The eyewear of claim 6 , wherein the extender comprises a bushing coupled to the temple, the bushing containing a spring configured to extend about the extension member.

9. The eyewear of claim 8 , wherein the spring is configured to enable the temple to radially extend from the hinge, and also create a bias force to retract the temple toward the hinge.

10. The eyewear of claim 8 , wherein the spring is configured to compress against the bushing when the bushing is extended from the hinge, and create a bias force configured to retract the temple toward the hinge.

11. Eyewear, comprising:

a frame;

an optical member supported by the frame;

a temple;

a hinge coupled between the frame and the temple, the hinge configured to allow rotation of the temple with respect to the frame;

an extender coupled to the hinge and configured to allow the temple to radially extend away from the hinge;

a cam configured to leverage the temple away from the frame when the temple rotates, wherein the cam is formed by the protrusion interposed between the temple and the frame,

a recess, wherein the protrusion is positioned in the recess when the temple is in an open position, and wherein the protrusion is removed from the recess in a hyperextended position; and

a cosmetic trim cap couple to the temple and including the recess.

12. The eyewear of claim 11 , wherein the cam is configured to create a gap between the frame and the temple when the temple is hyperextended.

13. The eyewear of claim 11 , wherein the protrusion is configured to slide out of the recess when the temple rotates to the hyperextended position.

14. The eyewear of claim 11 , wherein the frame includes the protrusion.
