Abstract

In an example, the present technique includes a method for capturing information from a spatial region to monitor human activities and create a spatial map of the spatial region. In an example, the technique allows a user of a cell phone to move from one location to another location and be tracked using rf backscattering, and each location being identified by the user by communicating a label via a cell phone or other mobile device.

Claims (31)

1. A method for creating a spatial heat map of living quarters, the method comprising:

emitting an electromagnetic RF signal into the living quarters;

detecting a back scattered RF signal, using at least one RF antenna, from the living quarters;

identifying a first event associated with a subregion of the living quarters based upon the detected RF backscattered signal;

mapping the first event onto a digitized representation of the living quarters; and

repeating the emitting, detecting, identifying, and mapping for other events onto the digitized representation of the living quarters to create the spatial heat map of the living quarters.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the living quarters includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, hallway, door and a plurality of objects.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reducing multipath interference by removing a subset of the other events before the identifying and mapping of the removed subset.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising normalizing the created heat map and outputting a normalized heat map.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the creating the heat map is repeated for multiple time windows.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising labeling subregions of the living quarters based on the created heat maps during the multiple time windows.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising labelling a subregion as a bedroom based on a heat map created during a nighttime window.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising labelling a subregion as a bathroom based on the heat map created during the nighttime window, wherein the heat map shows more time spent in the bedroom than the bathroom.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising labeling a subregion as a living room based on an area of the heat map created during an evening time window showing a most time spent.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising labeling a subregion as a hallway as shown as a corridor in the created spatial heat map.

11. A system for creating a spatial heat map of living quarters, comprising:

a processor;

a radio frequency module, coupled to the processor, comprising at least one antenna configured to receive backscattered electromagnetic radiation signals from the living quarters, and transmit information associated with the back scattered electromagnetic radiation signals to the processor; and

a memory comprising instructions to cause the processor to execute a method, the method comprising:

identifying a first event associated with a subregion of the living quarters based upon the received RF backscattered signals;

mapping the first event onto a digitized representation of the living quarters; and

repeating the identifying and mapping for other events onto the digitized representation of the living quarters to create the spatial heat map of the living quarters.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the living quarters includes a bedroom, bathroom, living room, hallway, door and a plurality of objects.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises reducing multipath interference by removing a subset of the other events before the identifying and mapping of the removed subset.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises normalizing the created heat map and outputting a normalized heat map.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the creating the heat map is repeated for multiple time windows.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the method further comprises labeling subregions of the living quarters based on the created heat maps during the multiple time windows.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the method further comprises labelling a subregion as a bedroom based on a heat map created during a nighttime window.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the method further comprises labelling a subregion as a bathroom based on the heat map created during the nighttime window, wherein the heat map shows more time spent in the bedroom than the bathroom.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the method further comprises labeling a subregion as a living room based on an area of the heat map created during an evening time window showing a most time spent.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises labeling a subregion as a hallway as shown as a corridor in the created spatial heat map.
