Abstract

Provided is a refrigerator including a cabinet having a refrigerating compartment and a freezing compartment defined therein and an ice maker disposed in the freezing compartment. The ice maker includes a cold-air hole for receiving cold air, an upper tray made of an elastic material, wherein the upper tray is positioned to be exposed to the cold-air flowing from the cold-air hole, a lower tray made of an elastic material, wherein the lower tray is coupled to the upper tray to define a plurality of spherical ice chambers therebetween, a driver for pivoting the lower tray to open the spherical ice chambers, at least one thermally-insulating portion formed at a top face of the upper tray and corresponding to at least one of the ice chambers respectively, wherein the at least one thermally-insulating portion is constructed to prevent the cold-air from invading the at least one corresponding ice chamber.

Claims (44)

1. A refrigerator comprising:

a cabinet; and

an ice maker that defines a cold air hole configured to receive cold air, the ice maker comprising:

a first assembly including (i) a first tray made of an elastic material and defining a first ice chamber and (ii) a first casing that supports the first tray and defines a tray opening, wherein an exposing portion of the first tray is positioned to be exposed to the cold air flowing through the tray opening, and

a second assembly including a second tray made of an elastic material and defining a second ice chamber, wherein a plurality of ice chambers are defined by the corresponding first and second ice chambers of the first and second trays,

wherein a thickness of at least a first portion of the exposing portion of the first tray at a location corresponding to a first ice chamber among the plurality of ice chambers that is positioned closest to the cold air hole is greater than thicknesses of other portions of the exposing portion of the first tray at locations corresponding to other ice chambers among the plurality of ice chambers, and

wherein the first portion and the other portions of the exposing portion are exposed through the tray opening.

2. The refrigerator of claim 1 , wherein the exposing portion of the first tray protrudes through the tray opening and is exposed to the cold air.

3. The refrigerator of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ice chambers are arranged in a row extending away from the cold air hole.

4. The refrigerator of claim 1 , wherein first plate of the first casing defines a through-opening that is opposite the cold air hole and is configured to discharge the cold air received through the cold air hole, and

wherein the plurality of ice chambers are provided between the cold air hole and the through-opening.

5. The refrigerator of claim 4 , further comprising:

a cold air guide provided on the first plate and configured to guide flow of the cold air from the cold air hole toward the first ice chamber,

wherein the plurality of ice chambers are arranged starting from the first ice chamber disposed at an exit of the cold air guide, and

wherein the first portion of the first tray having the thickness greater than the other portions is positioned closest to the exit of the cold air guide.

6. The refrigerator of claim 1 , further comprising a shield that is extended from an edge portion of the tray opening and is configured to cover the first portion of the first tray corresponding to the first ice chamber from the cold air received through the cold air hole.

7. The refrigerator of claim 6 , wherein a plurality of ejector-receiving openings are defined at each of the plurality of ice chambers, and

wherein an opening-defining wall extends from a circumference of each of the ejector-receiving openings.

8. The ice maker of claim 7 , wherein a connection rib that connects one of the opening-defining walls to an adjacent one of the opening-defining walls is provided on each opening-defining wall, and

wherein the shield defines a cut that allows the connection rib to pass therethrough.

9. The ice maker of claim 8 , wherein a width of the cut decreases in a direction away from the first ice chamber, and

wherein a width of an end of the cut corresponds to a width of the connection rib.

10. The ice maker of claim 8 , further comprising:

an additional connection rib formed on the first casing at a position adjacent to both ends of the cut, wherein the additional connection rib is in contact with an outer face of the opening-defining wall, an outer face of the first tray, and an inner face of the shield.

11. The ice maker of claim 7 , further comprising:

connection ribs arranged along a circumference of the opening-defining wall to connect an outer face of the opening-defining wall and an outer face of the first tray with each other.

12. The ice maker of claim 11 , wherein rib grooves that receive therein at least some of the connection ribs are defined in the shield.

13. An ice maker configured to receive cold air through a cold air hole that is provided at the ice maker, comprising:

a first assembly including (i) a first tray made of an elastic material and defining a first ice chamber and (ii) a first casing that supports the first tray and defines a tray opening, wherein an exposing portion of the first tray is positioned to be exposed to the cold air flowing through the tray opening; and

a second assembly including a second tray made of an elastic material and defining a second ice chamber, wherein a plurality of ice chambers are defined by the corresponding first and second ice chambers of the first and second trays,

wherein a thickness of at least a first portion of the exposing portion of the first tray at a location corresponding to a first ice chamber among the plurality of ice chambers that is positioned closest to the cold air hole is greater than thicknesses of other portions of the exposing portion of the first tray at locations corresponding to other ice chambers among the plurality of ice chambers, and

wherein the first portion and the other portions of the exposing portion are exposed through the tray opening.

14. The ice maker of claim 13 , further comprising a shield that is extended from an edge portion of the tray opening and is configured to cover the first portion of the first tray corresponding to the first ice chamber from the cold air received through the cold air hole.

15. The ice maker of claim 14 , wherein a plurality of ejector-receiving openings are defined at each of the plurality of ice chambers, and

wherein an opening-defining wall extends from a circumference of each of the ejector-receiving openings.

16. The ice maker of claim 15 , wherein a connection rib that connects one of the opening-defining walls to an adjacent one of the opening-defining walls is provided on each opening-defining wall, and

wherein the shield defines a cut that allows the connection rib to pass therethrough.

17. The ice maker of claim 16 , wherein a width of the cut decreases in a direction away from the first ice chamber, and

wherein a width of an end of the cut corresponds to a width of the connection rib.

18. The ice maker of claim 16 , further comprising:
