Abstract

The current invention generally relates to apparatus and method to analyze and separate biological entities, including cells, bacteria and molecules from human blood, body tissue, body fluid and other human related biological samples. The claimed apparatus and method analyze, or detect, biological entities based on optical signals received from said entities by using optical detectors. The claimed apparatus and method further separate biological entities with using micro-actuator activated sorting devices.

a coil made of a conductive material and having one or more turns, and one or more magnets generating magnetic field components with opposite field directions; and

a selector gate attached to said actuator and operable to deflect said biological entities from said input channel to either said first or second output channel,

wherein said coil and said selector gate move when an electric current is applied to said coil.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said selector gate moves in a first direction along a linear path to a first position that deflects said biological entities to said first output channel with continued application of a first current to said coil, and wherein said selector gate moves in a second direction, opposite to said first direction, along said linear path to a second position that deflects said biological entities to said second output channel with continued application of a second current, opposite to said first current, to said coil.

3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said coil comprises one of copper, silver, or gold.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said selector gate moves in a first direction along an arc path to a first position that deflects said biological entities to said first output channel with continued application of a first current to said coil, and wherein said selector gate moves in a second direction, opposite to said first direction, along said arc path to a second position that deflects said biological entities to said second output channel with continued application of a second current, opposite to said first current, to said coil.

5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said substrate comprises one of glass, plastic, or silicon.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said coil has a flat geometry and lies on a planar surface of said actuator.

7. The device according to claim 1 further comprising a position sensor formed on said substrate that detects position of said coil.

8. The device according to claim 7 further comprising a controller in communication with said optical detector, said actuator, and said position sensor through electrical connections, wherein said controller operates to:

(i) control said optical detector to detect said biological entities; and

(ii) apply said electric current to said coil based on a signal from said position sensor.

9. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said optical detector comprises at least one optical illuminator and at least one optical sensor.

10. The device according to claim 9 , wherein said at least one optical illuminator and at least one optical sensor are respectively disposed on opposite wall surfaces of said input channel having a substantially rectangular cross section.

11. The device according to claim 1 further comprising two springs disposed in between said coil and said substrate and providing electrical connections to said coil.

12. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said input channel and said first and second output channels lie in a same plane in said substrate.

13. The device according to claim 1 further comprising an acoustic generation component attached to said substrate for generating an acoustic standing wave within said input channel to steer said biological entities into a detection region of said optical detector within said input channel.

14. The device according to claim 1 , wherein said one or more magnets comprise a permanent magnet.

15. A device for separating biological entities in a fluid sample comprising:

an input channel formed in a substrate and having an exit;

a first output channel formed in said substrate and having a first entrance;

a second output channel formed in said substrate and having a second entrance;

an optical detector configured to identify said biological entities flowing through said input channel;

an actuator including:

a coil made of a conductive material and having one or more turns; and

one or more magnets generating magnetic field components with opposite field directions; and

a path selector attached to said actuator and including first and second passageways embedded in said path selector, said first and second passageways fluidically connecting said exit to said first and second entrances, respectively,

wherein said coil and said path selector move when an electric current is applied to said coil.

16. The device according to claim 15 , wherein said path selector moves in a first direction along a linear path to a first position that enables said first passageway to fluidically connect said exit to said first entrance with continued application of a first current to said coil, wherein said path selector moves in a second direction, opposite to said first direction, along said linear path to a second position that enables said second passageway to fluidically connect said exit to said second entrance with continued application of a second current, opposite to said first current, to said coil.

17. The device according to claim 15 , wherein said coil has a flat geometry and lies on a planar surface of said actuator.

18. The device according to claim 15 , wherein said one or more magnets comprise a permanent magnet.

19. The device according to claim 15 , wherein said path selector rotates in a first direction to a first position that enables said first passageway to fluidically connect said exit to said first entrance with continued application of a first current to said coil, and wherein said path selector rotates in a second direction, opposite to said first direction, to a second position that enables said second passageway to fluidically connect said exit to said second entrance with continued application of a second current, opposite to said first current, to said coil.
