Abstract

Imaging devices, systems, and methods are provided. Some embodiments of the present disclosure are particularly directed to imaging a region of interest in tissue with photoacoustic and ultrasound modalities. In some embodiments, a medical sensing system includes one or more external optical emitters and a measurement apparatus configured to be placed within a vascular pathway. The one or more optical emitters and the measurement apparatus may be moved together synchronously. The measurement apparatus may be configured to receive sound waves created by the interaction between emitted optical pulses and tissue, and transmit and receive ultrasound signals. The medical sensing system may also include a processing engine operable to produce images of the region of interest and a display configured to visually display the image of the region of interest.

Claims (19)

1. A system, comprising:

a processing unit configured for communication with a non-imaging optical emitter, a measurement apparatus separate from the non-imaging optical emitter, an actuator connected to the non-imaging optical emitter, and a pullback device connected to the measurement apparatus, wherein the processing unit is configured to:

control the non-imaging optical emitter to emit optical pulses to tissue inside of a body, wherein the non-imaging optical emitter is configured to be positioned outside of the body;

control the measurement apparatus to receive photoacoustic sound waves generated by the tissue resulting from interaction of the optical pulses with the tissue, wherein the measurement apparatus is configured to be positioned within a vascular pathway inside of the body;

control the actuator to provide first movement of the non-imaging optical emitter outside of the body; and

control the pullback device to provide second movement of the measurement apparatus within the vascular pathway,

wherein the first movement and the second movement are coordinated such that the photoacoustic sound waves generated by different parts of the tissue during the first movement are received by the measurement apparatus at different positions of the second movement.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first movement comprises a first shape.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first shape comprises linear shape.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first shape comprises a non-linear shape or an arcuate shape.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the second movement comprises a second shape.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the second shape comprises a linear shape.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the second shape comprises a non-linear shape or an arcuate shape.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first shape and the second shape are the same.

9. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first shape and the second shape are different.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first movement comprises a first length, and wherein the second movement comprises a second length that is different than the first length.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first movement comprises a first velocity, and wherein the second movement comprises a second velocity that is different than the first velocity.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first movement comprises a first length, and wherein the second movement comprises a second length that is the same as the first length.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first movement comprises a first velocity, and wherein the second movement comprises a second velocity that is the same as the first velocity.
