Abstract

Embodiments described herein provide for system and methods to crowdsource the location of wireless devices and accessories that lack a connection to a wide area network. One embodiment provides for a data processing system configured to perform operations comprising loading a user interface on an electronic device, the user interface to enable the determination of a location of a wireless accessory that is associated with the electronic device, generating a set of public keys included within a signal broadcast by the wireless accessory, the signal broadcast during a first period, sending the set of public keys to a server with a request to return data that corresponds with a public key in the set of public keys, decrypting the location data using a private key associated with the public key, and processing the location data to determine a probable location for the wireless accessory.

Claims (61)

1. A method implemented on an electronic device, the method comprising:

performing a beacon scan using a baseband processor of the electronic device;

receiving beacon data via a wireless radio coupled to the baseband processor, the beacon data to identify a wireless accessory and the beacon identifier is a public key generated by the wireless accessory;

storing a timestamp and beacon identifier associated with the beacon data to a beacon scan buffer;

determining a location for the electronic device that corresponds with the timestamp when an application processor of the electronic device is in an active state;

encrypting the location for the electronic device using the beacon identifier for the wireless accessory; and

transmitting encrypted location data, the beacon identifier, and the timestamp to a server device, the server device to store the encrypted location data for retrieval by an electronic device associated with the wireless accessory.

2. The method as in claim 1 , additionally comprising determining a signal strength measurement for a signal associated with the beacon data and transmitting the signal strength measurement with the encrypted location data.

3. The method as in claim 1 , additionally comprising determining a distance to the wireless accessory using an ultra-wide band radio.

4. The method as in claim 1 , additionally comprising placing the application processor of the electronic device in the active state in response to a determination that the beacon scan buffer is full.

5. The method as in claim 1 , wherein determining the location for the electronic device includes:

performing a periodic Wi-Fi scan to gather a list of service set identifiers within range of the electronic device; and

determining the location for the electronic device, the location determined at least in part based on the list of service set identifiers.

6. The method as in claim 1 , additionally comprising:

storing the encrypted location data to a transmission queue in memory of the electronic device; and

transmitting the encrypted location data to the server device during a transmit interval.

7. The method as in claim 1 , additionally comprising performing the beacon scan using a baseband processor of the electronic device while an application processor of the electronic device is in a low power state.

8. A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause one or more processors of a data processing system to perform operations comprising:

performing a beacon scan using a baseband processor of an electronic device;

receiving beacon data via a wireless radio coupled to the baseband processor, the beacon data to identify a wireless accessory and the beacon identifier is a public key generated by the wireless accessory;

storing a timestamp and beacon identifier associated with the beacon data to a beacon scan buffer;

determining a location for the electronic device that corresponds with the timestamp when an application processor of the electronic device is in an active state;

encrypting the location for the electronic device using the beacon identifier for the wireless accessory; and

transmitting encrypted location data, the beacon identifier, and the timestamp to a server device, the server device to store the encrypted location data for retrieval by an electronic device associated with the wireless accessory.

9. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , the operations additionally comprising:

determining a signal strength measurement for a signal associated with the beacon data and transmitting the signal strength measurement with the encrypted location data.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , the operations additionally comprising:

determining a distance to the wireless accessory using an ultra-wide band radio.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , the operations additionally comprising:

placing the application processor of the electronic device in the active state in response to a determination that the beacon scan buffer is full.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , wherein determining the location for the electronic device includes:

performing a periodic Wi-Fi scan to gather a list of service set identifiers within range of the electronic device; and

determining the location for the electronic device, the location determined at least in part based on the list of service set identifiers.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , the operations additionally comprising:

storing the encrypted location data to a transmission queue in memory of the electronic device; and

transmitting the encrypted location data to the server device during a transmit interval.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable medium as in claim 8 , the operations additionally comprising:

performing the beacon scan using a baseband processor of the electronic device while an application processor of the electronic device is in a low power state.

15. A data processing system comprising:

a memory to store instructions for execution;

one or more processors to execute the instructions stored in memory, wherein the instructions, when executed cause the one or more processors to:

perform a beacon scan using a baseband processor of an electronic device;

receive beacon data via a wireless radio coupled to the baseband processor, the beacon data to identify a wireless accessory and the beacon identifier is a public key generated by the wireless accessory;

store a timestamp and beacon identifier associated with the beacon data to a beacon scan buffer;

determine a location for the electronic device that corresponds with the timestamp when an application processor of the electronic device is in an active state;

encrypt the location for the electronic device using the beacon identifier for the wireless accessory; and

transmit encrypted location data, the beacon identifier, and the timestamp to a server device, the server device to store the encrypted location data for retrieval by an electronic device associated with the wireless accessory.
