Abstract

An interstitial message server system selects a like interstitial message that corresponds to a like user event generated by a user, a skip interstitial message corresponding to a skip user event generated by the user and a playthrough interstitial message corresponding to a play through user event. The like, skip and playthrough interstitial messages can be selected based upon an identifier of a media object that can be presented to the user. At least one each of the like, skip and playthrough interstitial messages can be sent to a user computer before or during the presentation of a media object. While or after the media object is presented to the user at the user computer, the user computer can be caused to detect a like, skip or playthrough user event with respect to the media object. The user computer can be caused to present the like, skip or playthrough interstitial message that was received by the computer and that corresponds to the detected like, skip or playthrough user event with minimal delay from the time the user event is detected.

Claims (44)

1. A method for transmitting interstitial messages, comprising:

identifying, by a processor, a first media object that is one of being presented on a user device or to be presented on the user device;

receiving, by the processor, information about members of a social network of the user;

retrieving, by the processor from a first memory, a content for an interstitial message related to the first media object;

generating, by the processor and based on the retrieved content and the received information about the members of the social network, the interstitial message configured to be presented on the user device in response to a detection, at the user device, of skip user event caused by a user of the user device in response to a presentation of the first media object on the user device, wherein a content of the generated interstitial message is based on the detected skip user event; and

transmitting, from the processor to the user device, the interstitial message that is configured to be presented audibly on the user device one of concurrently with a presentation of the first media object on the user device or before the presentation of the first media object on the user device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending, from the processor to the first memory, a query for the content for the interstitial message.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the query includes a media object identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving, by the processor from a second memory, the social network information.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second memory is the first memory.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising sending, from the processor to the second memory, a query for the social network information.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

the query includes a user identifier; and

the social network information includes a list of members of a social network that corresponds to the user identifier.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

the query further includes an identifier of the first media object; and

the social network information further includes an indication of the members of the social network that have performed an act to express an opinion about the first media object.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the act comprises at least one of an act to cause an indication of a favorable opinion about the first media object, an act to cause a presentation of the first media object to skip, or an act to cause the presentation of the first media object to continue through to a completion of the first media object.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving, by the processor from a second memory, an information about the first media object.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second memory is the first memory.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the information about the first media object includes at least a title, an artist, lyrics, a producer, or a release date.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising sending, from the processor to the second memory, a query that includes a media object identifier.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating the interstitial message is further based on a geolocation information of the user device.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising receiving, by the processor from a second memory, the geolocation information of the user device.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

comparing, by the processor, the geolocation information of the user device and a location of a future live performance by an artist associated with the first media object; and

determining, by the processor, that a difference between the geolocation information of the user device and the location of the future live performance is less than a threshold,

wherein, in response to a determination that the difference is less than the threshold, the generating the interstitial message includes, in the interstitial message, an information about the future live performance.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing, by the processor and before a completion of the transmitting the interstitial message, a commencement of a transmission of a second media object to the user device.

18. A system for transmitting interstitial messages, comprising:

a memory configured to store the interstitial messages, the interstitial messages related to media objects; and

a processor configured to:

identify a media object that is one of being presented on a user device or to be presented on the user device;

retrieve, from the memory, a content for an interstitial message related to the media object;

receive information about members of a social network of the user;

generate, based on the retrieved content and the received information about the members of the social network, the interstitial message that is configured to be presented on the user device in response to a detection, at the user device, of a skip user event caused by a user of the user device in response to a presentation of the first media object on the user device, wherein a content of the generated interstitial message is based on the detected skip user event; and

transmit, to the user device, the interstitial message, the interstitial message configured to be presented audibly on the user device one of concurrently with a presentation of the media object on the user device or before the presentation of the media object on the user device.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content of the generated interstitial message of the skip user event is a contrarian interstitial message that includes content that reports a member of the social network of the user performed an opposite action to the skip user event in response to the first media object.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer code for controlling a processor to cause the processor to transmit interstitial messages, the computer code including instructions to cause the processor to:

identify a media object that is one of being presented on a user device or to be presented on the user device;

receive information about members of a social network of the user;

retrieve, from a memory, a content for an interstitial message related to the media object;

generate, based on the retrieved content and the received information about the members of the social network, the interstitial message, the interstitial message configured to be presented on the user device in response to a detection, at the user device, of a skip user event caused by a user of the user device in response to a presentation of the first media object on the user device, wherein a content of the generated interstitial message is based on the detected skip user event; and

transmit, to the user device, the interstitial message that is configured to be presented audibly on the user device one of concurrently with a presentation of the media object on the user device or before the presentation of the media object on the user device.
