Abstract

A computer-implemented method of processing a digital dental impression includes determining one or more first digital surface regions visible from a first side of the digital dental impression along an occlusion axis and one or more second digital surface regions visible from a second side of the digital dental impression along the occlusion axis, segmenting the digital dental impression into one or more digital segments and determining the one or more digital segments as a first digital segment or a second digital segment based on the majority of digital surface regions in the one or more digital segments.

Claims (32)

1. A computer-implemented method of digitally processing a digital dental impression, comprising:

determining one or more first digital surface regions visible from a first side of the digital dental impression along an occlusion axis and one or more second digital surface regions visible from a second side of the digital dental impression along the occlusion axis;

segmenting the digital dental impression into one or more digital segments; and

determining the one or more digital segments as a first digital segment or a second digital segment based on the majority of digital surface regions in the one or more digital segments.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining one or more cusp regions on the first side and fewer cusps regions on the second side, wherein the second side comprises a non-impression side.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the segmenting comprises curvature-based segmentation.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising merging one or more smaller digital segments into the first digital segment or the second digital segment based on one selected from the group consisting of segment curvature, area, and perimeter.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the segmenting comprises determining segment boundaries by concavity.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the segment boundaries correspond to maximum curvature along the digital surface.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein segmenting further comprises determining one or more bubble segments and wherein merging comprises excluding the one or more bubble segments from merging with the one or more first digital segments and the one or more second digital segments.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an impression axis longitudinal along a surface impression area;

determining a sidewall axis perpendicular to the occlusion axis and the impression axis;

determining one or more sidewall jaw regions visible from one or more sidewall directions around the sidewall axis; and

removing the one or more sidewall jaw regions.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occlusion axis is auto-detected.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining one or more unattributed regions as visible from the first and the second side of the digital dental impression.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising splitting the one or more first digital segments from the one or more second digital surface segments.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital dental impression comprises two full arch impressions.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining one or more segments as bubble regions; and

removing the one or more bubble regions from the digital dental impression.

14. A system for digitally processing a digital dental impression, comprising:

a processor;

a computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions executable by the processor to perform steps comprising:

determining one or more first digital surface regions visible from a first side of the digital dental impression along an occlusion axis and one or more second digital surface regions visible from a second side of the digital dental impression along the occlusion axis;

segmenting the digital dental impression into one or more digital segments; and

determining the one or more digital segments as a first digital segment or a second digital segment based on the majority of digital surface regions in the one or more digital segments.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing executable computer program instructions for digitally processing a digital dental impression the computer program instructions comprising instructions for:

determining one or more first digital surface regions visible from a first side of the digital dental impression along an occlusion axis and one or more second digital surface regions visible from a second side of the digital dental impression along the occlusion axis;

segmenting the digital dental impression into one or more digital segments; and

determining the one or more digital segments as a first digital segment or a second digital segment based on the majority of digital surface regions in the one or more digital segments.
