Abstract

An overdose of opioids can cause the user to stop breathing, resulting in death. A physiological monitoring system monitors respiration based on oxygen saturation readings from a fingertip pulse oximeter in communication with a smart mobile device and sends opioid monitoring information from the smart mobile device to an opioid overdose monitoring service. The opioid overdose monitoring service notifies a first set of contacts when the opioid monitoring information indicates a non-distress stats and notifies a second set of contact when the opioid monitoring information indicates an overdose event. The notification can be a phone call or text message to a specified person, emergency personnel, or first responders, and can include the location of the smart mobile device. The smart mobile device can also include the location of the nearest treatment center having emergency medication used in treating opioid overdose, such as naloxone.

Claims (28)

1. A system to monitor for indications of opioid overdose and to deliver therapeutic drugs, the system comprising:

a sensor wearable by a user configured to obtain data indicative of at least one physiological parameter of the user;

a signal processor configured to process the data to provide the at least one physiological parameter;

a drug delivery apparatus wearable by the user and configured to deliver one or more doses of a therapeutic drug, the drug delivery apparatus comprising a delivery device that includes a dose of a therapeutic drug stored in a reservoir, a drug delivery channel, a dispensing device to dispense the therapeutic drug from the reservoir through the drug delivery channel, and activation circuitry to activate the dispensing device:

a medical monitoring hub configured to monitor the at least one physiological parameter, the medical monitoring hub comprising memory storing instructions and one or more computer processors configured to execute the instructions to at least:

compare the at least one physiological parameter to a threshold that is indicative of opioid overdose;

determine that an overdose event is occurring or likely to occur based on the comparison; and

send at least one activation signal to the drug delivery apparatus to dispense

at least one dose of the therapeutic drug based on the determination; and

a smart device in communication with the signal processor to receive the at least one physiological parameter and in communication with the medical monitoring hub, wherein the smart device comprises memory storing instructions, and one or more microprocessors configured to execute the instructions to at least:

compare the at least one physiological parameter to the threshold that is indicative of opioid overdose;

determine that the overdose event is occurring or likely to occur based on the comparison;

determine that the medical monitoring hub failed to send the at least one activation signal; and

send the at least one activation signal to the drug delivery apparatus to dispense at least one dose of the therapeutic drug in response to the determination that that the medical monitoring hub failed to send the at least one activation signal.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more computer processors of the medical monitoring hub are further configured to:

provide an alarm in response to determining that the overdose event is occurring or likely to occur; and

wait a period of time after providing the alarm before sending the at least one activation signal;

wherein receiving user input during the period of time stops the sending of the at least one activation signal.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more computer processors of the medical monitoring hub are further configured to:

receive an indication of medical distress of the user; and

send a notification of the medical distress to one or more contacts, wherein the one or more contacts include medical professionals, relatives, friends, and neighbors.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the medical monitoring hub is in communication with a remote server comprising a user database, memory storing instructions, and one or more computing devices configured to execute the instructions to cause the remote server to access user information associated with the user in the user database, the user information including contact information of contacts to notify with overdose status of the user.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the medical monitoring hub further comprises an input to receive user input, a speaker, and alarm circuitry, the one or more computer processors of the medical monitoring hub are further configured to produce an alarm based on the determination, and volume of the alarm increases until the user input is received.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a housing that houses the sensor, the signal processor, and the drug delivery device.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the drug delivery apparatus is a single use drug delivery apparatus.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the drug delivery apparatus comprises a patch and includes an adhesive layer for adhesion to the user.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one physiological parameter comprises one or more of oxygen saturation, heart rate, respiration rate, pleth variability, and perfusion index.

10. A kit comprising the system of claim 1 .
