Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for generating and displaying a model of a subject's teeth. Described herein are intraoral scanning methods and apparatuses for generating a three-dimensional model of a subject's intraoral region (e.g., teeth). These methods and apparatuses may be used for identifying and evaluating lesions, caries and cracks in the teeth.

Claims (43)

1. A method comprising:

receiving scan data of a patient's dentition comprising a first set of two-dimensional (2D) images taken with a hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a first mode;

generating a three-dimensional (3D) model of one or more teeth using the first set of 2D images;

receiving scan data of the patient's dentition comprising a plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth taken with the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a second mode;

displaying, in a user interface, an image of the 3D model of the one or more teeth and a viewing window over a portion of the 3D model;

receiving, from the user interface, a change in one or more of: a relative distance or a relative angle between the viewing window and the 3D model;

displaying, in the user interface, an image from the first set of 2D images that approximates the relative distance and angle between the viewing window and the 3D model; and

displaying, on one or both of the 3D model in the user interface and the image from the first set of 2D images, a color representation of a fluorescence of the one or more teeth derived from the plurality of 2D fluorescent images.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a sleeve adapted for emitting and fluorescence onto the hand-held intraoral scanner to generate the plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth taken with the hand-held intraoral scanner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying, on the 3D model in the user interface, the color representation of the fluorescence of the one or more teeth comprises overlaying the color representation onto the 3D model.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising collecting the scan data of the patient's dentition comprising the first set of two 2D images with the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in the first mode using a first sleeve on the hand-held intraoral scanner; applying a second sleeve for fluorescent imaging onto the hand-held intraoral scanner; and collecting the plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth with the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in the second mode using the second sleeve.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lesions comprise caries.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lesions comprise plaque.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving scan data of the patient's dentition taken with the hand-held intraoral scanner in the first mode comprises scanning the patient's dentition using visible light.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving user input to change a rotation or zoom of the 3D model in the user interface.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising alternating between scanning the patient's dentition in the first and second modes to collect the first set of 2D images and the plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving scan data of the patient's dentition comprising a plurality of 2D infrared images of the one or more teeth taken with the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a third mode.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising displaying, in the user interface with the 3D model of the one or more teeth, one or more 2D infrared images from the plurality of 2D infrared images.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising displaying, in the user interface, a region marker on the 3D model of the one or more teeth corresponding to a location of a tooth or teeth shown in in the one or more 2D infrared images.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the scan data of the patient's dentition comprising the first set of 2D images comprises wirelessly receiving the scan data.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising annotating the one or more lesions to provide quantifying information.

15. A method comprising:

generating scan data of a patient's dentition comprising a first set of two-dimensional (2D) images by scanning the patient's dentition with a hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a first mode;

generating a three-dimensional (3D) model of one or more teeth using the first set of 2D images;

generating scan data of the patient's dentition comprising a plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth by scanning the patient's dentition with the hand-held intraoral scanner comprising a sleeve having a fluorescent light source, the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a second mode;

displaying, in a user interface, an image of the 3D model of the one or more teeth and a viewing window over a portion of the 3D model;

receiving, from the user interface, a change in one or more of: a relative distance or a relative angle between the viewing window and the 3D model;

displaying, in the user interface, an image derived from the first set of 2D images that approximates the relative distance and angle between the viewing window and the 3D model, wherein the image derived from the first set of 2D images is derived from multiple images of the set of 2D images; and

displaying, overlaid onto one or both of the 3D model in the user interface and the image derived from the first set of 2D images, a color representation of a fluorescence of the one or more teeth derived from the plurality of 2D fluorescent image.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the one or more lesions comprise caries.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the one or more lesions comprise plaque.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein scanning the patient's dentition using visible light.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising alternating between scanning the patient's dentition in the first and second modes to collect the first set of 2D images and the plurality of 2D fluorescent images of the one or more teeth.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising scanning the patient's dentition with the hand-held intraoral scanner operating in a third mode to receive a plurality of 2D infrared images of the one or more teeth.
