Abstract

In one example, a Network Functions Virtualization Orchestrator (NFVO) obtains a radio service descriptor defining communication parameters for a radio in a virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN). Based on the radio service descriptor, the NFVO determines whether a virtual Distributed Unit (vDU) that is configured in accordance with the communication parameters and a virtual Centralized Unit (vCU) that is configured in accordance with the communication parameters are already instantiated in the vRAN. If it is determined that the vDU or the vCU is not already instantiated, the NFVO automatically instantiates the vDU or the vCU in the vRAN.

Claims (44)

1. A virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) system, comprising:

a virtual computing platform operative to host one or more virtualized workloads, the one or more virtualized workloads comprising a virtual centralized unit (vCU) and a virtual distributed unit (vDU);

wherein the virtual computing platform comprises a virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) operative to instantiate vCUs or vDUs in the virtual computing platform;

the virtual computing platform hosting an Element Management System (EMS) and a network functions virtualization orchestrator (NFVO);

wherein the EMS is operative to:

receive a start-up message from a radio installed in a vRAN; and

transmit a first command to the NFVO;

wherein the NFVO is operative to automatically cause, responsive to the first command, the VIM to instantiate a vDU or a vCU for the radio based at least in part on communication parameters for the radio if resource availability of one or more vDUs instantiated in the virtual computing platform and configured in accordance with the communication parameters or one or more vCUs instantiated in the virtual computing platform and configured in accordance with the communication parameters is insufficient for the radio; and

wherein the EMS is operative to provide configuration information to the vDU or the vCU.

2. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the NFVO is operative to:

obtain the communication parameters; and

determine, based on the communication parameters, the resource availability.

3. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the resource availability of the one or more vCUs includes one or more of a compute resource availability of the vCU, a storage resource availability of the vCU, a memory resource availability of the vCU, and an input/output resource availability of the vCU.

4. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the resource availability of the one or more vDUs includes one or more of a compute resource availability of the vDU, a storage resource availability of the vDU, a memory resource availability of the vDU, and an input/output resource availability of the vDU.

5. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the communication parameters comprise one or more of physical radio parameters, Layer 2 radio parameters, Layer 3 radio parameters and radio frequency parameters.

6. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the VIM is operative to deploy one or more container workloads.

7. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the NFVO is operative to: monitor the vDU or the vCU based on one or more service level agreements.

8. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the configuration information provided to the vCU or the vDU is based on the communication parameters.

9. The vRAN system of claim 8 , wherein the communication parameters comprise one or more of physical radio parameters, Layer 2 radio parameters, Layer 3 radio parameters and radio frequency parameters.

10. The vRAN system of claim 1 , wherein the NFVO is operative to:

determine whether a currently-instantiated vCU is suitable for the radio; and

allocate the currently-instantiated vCU if the currently-instantiated vCU is suitable.

11. In a virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) system, a method comprising:

hosting, by a virtual computing platform, one or more virtualized workloads, the one or more virtualized workloads comprising a virtual centralized unit (vCU) and a virtual distributed unit (vDU);

wherein the virtual computing platform comprises a virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) operative to instantiate vCUs or vDUs in the virtual computing platform;

the virtual computing platform hosting an Element Management System (EMS) and a network functions virtualization orchestrator (NFVO);

receiving, by the EMS, a start-up message from a radio installed in a vRAN;

transmitting, by the EMS, a first command to the NFVO;

automatically causing, by the NFVO, responsive to the first command, the VIM to instantiate a vDU or a vCU for the radio based at least in part on communication parameters for the radio if resource availability of one or more vDUs instantiated in the virtual computing platform and configured in accordance with the communication parameters or one or more vCUs instantiated in the virtual computing platform and configured in accordance with the communication parameters is insufficient for the radio; and

providing, by the EMS, configuration information to the vDU or the vCU.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

by the NFVO:

obtaining the communication parameters; and

determining, based on the communication parameters, the resource availability.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the resource availability of the one or more vCUs includes one or more of a compute resource availability of the vCU, a storage resource availability of the vCU, a memory resource availability of the vCU, and an input/output resource availability of the vCU.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the resource availability of the one or more vDUs includes one or more of a compute resource availability of the vDU, a storage resource availability of the vDU, a memory resource availability of the vDU, and an input/output resource availability of the vDU.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the communication parameters comprise one or more of physical radio parameters, Layer 2 radio parameters, Layer 3 radio parameters and radio frequency parameters.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the VIM is operative to deploy one or more container workloads.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising monitoring the vDU or the vCU based on one or more service level agreements.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the configuration information provided to the vCU or the vDU are based on the communication parameters.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the communication parameters comprise one or more of physical radio parameters, Layer 2 radio parameters, Layer 3 radio parameters and radio frequency parameters.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining, by the NFVO, whether a currently-instantiated vCU is suitable for the radio; and

allocating the currently-instantiated vCU if the currently-instantiated vCU is suitable.
