Abstract

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for notification support in extended discontinuous reception mode. A base station and UE may configure eDRX communication. An indication may be received during the eDRX communication. The network may cache the indication. The network may modify the DRX configuration. The network may use a wake up signal. In response, the UE may receive the indication while achieving power savings from the eDRX configuration.

Claims (45)

1. A method for operating a network device, including:

establishing cellular communication with a user equipment (UE);

configuring extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) with the UE;

communicating with the UE using the eDRX configuration, including an eDRX cycle of the UE;

broadcasting a message to a plurality of UEs during an off duration of the eDRX cycle of the UE;

caching the message;

transmitting a short message to the UE during an eDRX on duration of the UE, wherein the short message indicates the message is cached; and

transmitting the cached message to the UE.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed during an on duration of the eDRX cycle.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to transmitting the short message.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE comprises broadcasting the cached message to a plurality of UEs.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to receiving a request from the UE to receive the cached message.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said transmitting the cached message comprises transmitting one or more system information blocks (SIBs) to the UE.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message comprises an emergency message.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one memory medium storing program instructions for execution within a network device;

at least one processor coupled to the at least one memory medium, configured to execute the program instructions to cause the network device to:

establish cellular communication with a user equipment (UE);

configure extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) with the UE, including an eDRX cycle of the UE;

communicate with the UE using the eDRX configuration;

broadcast a message to a plurality of UEs during an off duration of the eDRX cycle of the UE;

cache the message;

transmit a short message to the UE during an eDRX on duration of the UE, wherein the short message indicates the message is cached; and

transmit the cached message to the UE.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed during an on duration of the eDRX cycle.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to transmitting the short message.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE comprises broadcasting the cached message to a plurality of UEs.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to receiving a request from the UE to receive the cached message.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said transmitting the cached message comprises transmitting one or more system information blocks (SIBs) to the UE.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the message comprises an emergency message.

15. A network device, comprising:

communication circuitry; and

at least one processor coupled to the communication circuitry, wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause the network device to:

establish cellular communication with a user equipment (UE);

configure extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) with the UE including an eDRX cycle of the UE;

communicate with the UE using the eDRX configuration;

broadcast a message to a plurality of UEs during an off duration of the eDRX cycle of the UE;

cache the message;

transmit a short message to the UE during an eDRX on duration of the UE, wherein the short message indicates the message is cached; and

transmit the cached message to the UE.

16. The network device of claim 15 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed during an on duration of the eDRX cycle.

17. The network device of claim 15 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to transmitting the short message.

18. The network device of claim 15 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE comprises broadcasting the cached message to a plurality of UEs.

19. The network device of claim 15 , wherein said transmitting the cached message to the UE is performed in response to receiving a request from the UE to receive the cached message.

20. The network device of claim 15 , wherein said transmitting the cached message comprises transmitting one or more system information blocks (SIBs) to the UE.
