Abstract

A gaming machine provides a spinning reel game having a base game, from which a hold and spin game is triggered when a determined quantity of configurable symbols are displayed in a base game outcome. When the feature game is triggered, volatility options are presented to the player. After receiving a volatility selection that specifies a first control factor for a hold and spin game, the gaming machine conducts the hold and spin game per the specified first control factor while using at least another control factor to maintain a same return-to-player across the volatility options.

3. The gaming machine of claim 2 , wherein the instructions cause the control system to randomly assign a value to each held configurable symbols independent of the volatility selection.

4. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the control system to assign a value to the respective configurable symbol after presenting the award for the respective configurable symbol, wherein the control system assigns the value in a manner that is independent of the volatility selection.

5. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the control system to assign a value to a first configurable symbol of the feature game outcome after presenting the award for the first configurable symbol, wherein the control system assigns the value in a manner that varies the assigned values based on the volatility selection in order to maintain the same return-to-player across the volatility options.

6. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the control system to select the replacement symbols based on reel strips that maintain a same landing percentage for configurable symbols across the volatility options.

7. The gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the control system to select the replacement symbols based on reel strips that vary a landing percentage for configurable symbols across the volatility options in order to maintain the same return-to-player across the volatility options.

8. A method of a gaming machine, the method comprising:

establishing a credit balance in response to a credit input mechanism of the gaming machine receiving a physical item representing a credit value;

funding a wager amount from the established credit balance in response to initiating play of a base game based on input received via a player interface of the gaming machine;

dispensing a payout of the credit balance via a payout mechanism of the gaming machine;

presenting symbols of a base game outcome at display positions of a display system of the gaming machine;

presenting volatility options via the display system in response to the base game outcome triggering a feature game;

receiving, via the player interface, a volatility selection that selects a volatility option from the volatility options, wherein each volatility option corresponds to a plurality of control factors including an initial quantity of spins for the feature game; and

for each spin of the initial quantity of spins specified by the selected volatility option:

holding, with a control system of the gaming machine, configurable symbols in a feature game outcome presented at display positions of the display system;

providing, with the control system, the feature game outcome with replacement symbols that replace symbols at display positions of the display system that do not present a configurable symbol;

select, with the control system, a table based on a second control factor of the plurality of control factors, the table storing a plurality of multiplier values; and

for each replacement symbol that is a configurable symbol:

selecting, with the control system, a multiplier value from the selected table;

assigning, with the control system, the selected multiplier value to the respective configurable symbol; and

presenting, via the display system, an award for the respective configurable symbol based on a sum of values presented by the configurable symbols multiplied by the multiplier value assigned to the respective configurable symbol.

9. The method of claim 8 , comprising:

trigger, with the control system, the feature game in response to the base game outcome including a threshold quantity of trigger symbols; and

in response to triggering the feature game, replacing, with control system, the trigger symbols of the base game outcome with held configurable symbols in the feature game outcome.

10. The method of claim 9 , comprising randomly assign, with the control system, a value to each held configurable symbols independent of the volatility selection.

11. The method of claim 8 , comprising assigning, with the control system independent of the volatility selection, a value to the respective configurable symbol after presenting the award for the respective configurable symbol.

12. The method of claim 8 , comprising:

assigning, with the control system, a value to a first configurable symbol of the feature game outcome after presenting the award for the first configurable symbol;

wherein the assigning assigns the value in a manner that varies the assigned values based on the volatility selection in order to maintain the same return-to-player across the volatility options.

13. The method of claim 8 , comprising selecting, with the control system, the replacement symbols based on reel strips that maintain a same landing percentage for configurable symbols across the volatility options.

14. The method of claim 8 , comprising selecting, with the control system, the replacement symbols based on reel strips that vary a landing percentage for configurable symbols across the volatility options in order to maintain the same return-to-player across the volatility options.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that in response to being executed cause a gaming machine to:

establish a credit balance in response to a credit input mechanism of the gaming machine receiving a physical item representing a credit value;

fund a wager amount from the established credit balance in response to initiating play of a base game based on input received via a player interface of the gaming machine;
