Abstract

Devices and methods of treating conditions cause or exacerbated by excessive fluid pressures or retentions, such as pulmonary hypertension, that involves shunting excessive fluid pressure from one bodily chamber or vessel to another bodily chamber or vessel.

Claims (29)

1. A method for treating a medical condition in a circulatory system of a human comprising:

identifying a location in the circulatory system where a superior vena cava overlays a pulmonary artery;

puncturing said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery at said location;

inserting a shunt into said punctured location;

securing said shunt at said punctured location; and,

diverting blood in said circulatory system from said pulmonary artery into said superior vena cava.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said diverting blood flow further comprises allowing blood flow from said superior vena cava to right atrium of a heart.

3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein said securing said shunt at said punctured location comprises expanding a stent at said punctured location.

4. A method according to claim 3 , wherein said expanding comprises deploying a flared end of said stent in said pulmonary artery.

5. A method according to claim 4 , wherein said expanding comprises deploying a flared end of said stent in said superior vena cava.

6. A method according to claim 3 , wherein said stent is a covered stent.

7. A method according to claim 3 , wherein said stent is a balloon expandable stent.

8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said securing said shunt at said punctured location further comprises creating a flush connection between said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery.

9. A method of treating a condition in a circulatory system of a human comprising:

Creating a shunt between a superior vena cava and a pulmonary artery that are not connected prior to creating said shunt; wherein said pulmonary artery has a higher pressure than said superior vena cava; and,

shunting part of a blood flow in said pulmonary artery through said shunt, into said superior vena cava, and allowing said part of said blood flow into a right atrium of a heart.

10. A method according to claim 9 , wherein said creating said shunt further comprises creating a flush connection between said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising limiting blood flow through said shunt only when a threshold value of a pressure, a pressure gradient, an absolute flow, or a flow gradient is reached.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein said creating said shunt further comprises deploying flared ends of a stent in each of said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein said stent is a covered stent.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein said shunting part of said blood flow further comprises recirculating part of a blood flow from said pulmonary artery, through said heart, and back into said pulmonary artery.

15. A method for treating a medical condition in a circulatory system of a human comprising:

puncturing a superior vena cava and a pulmonary artery;

inserting a shunt into said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery;

expanding the shunt within the superior vena cava and within the pulmonary artery; and,

diverting part of a blood flow in said pulmonary artery through said shunt, into said superior vena cava, and allowing said blood flow into a right atrium of a heart.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said expanding said shunt further comprises creating a flush connection between said superior vena cava and said pulmonary artery.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said diverting part of said blood flow in said pulmonary artery reduces pulmonary hypertension.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said diverting part of said blood flow in said pulmonary artery further comprises recirculating said part of said blood flow to said pulmonary artery.
