Abstract

An example implementation includes (i) receiving sensor data that indicates topographical features of an environment in which a robotic device is operating, (ii) processing the sensor data into a topographical map that includes a two-dimensional matrix of discrete cells, the discrete cells indicating sample heights of respective portions of the environment, (iii) determining, for a first foot of the robotic device, a first step path extending from a first lift-off location to a first touch-down location, (iv) identifying, within the topographical map, a first scan patch of cells that encompass the first step path, (v) determining a first high point among the first scan patch of cells; and (vi) during the first step, directing the robotic device to lift the first foot to a first swing height that is higher than the determined first high point.

Claims (43)

1. A computer implemented method, when executed by data processing hardware, causes the data processing hardware to perform operations comprising:

obtaining an environment map comprising topographical information;

determining a step path for a foot of a legged robot, the step path extending from a lift off location to a touch-down location, the step path comprising a first swing height representing a maximum height above ground for the foot to travel along the step path;

determining, using the topographical information, an obstacle height exceeds the first swing height, the obstacle height representative of an obstacle in the step path; and

in response to determining the obstacle height exceeds the first swing height, adjusting the first swing height to a second swing height, the second swing height having a threshold height above the obstacle height.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first swing height comprises a default swing height.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the default swing height is based at least in part on a gait of the legged robot and a speed of the legged robot.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining, using the topographical information, a second obstacle height fails to exceed the first swing height; and

in response to determining that the second obstacle height fails to exceed the first swing height, maintaining the first swing height.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold height above the obstacle height comprises a clearance margin between the obstacle height and the second swing height.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the clearance margin is based at least in part on a standard deviation of the determined obstacle height.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the obstacle height comprises determining a high point of a portion of the topographical information, the portion of the topographical information along the step path.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the high point is representative of a height of the obstacle.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the high point is determined from a plurality of sample heights of the portion of the topographical information along the step path.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a second step path for a second foot of the legged robot, the second step path extending from a second lift off location to a second touch-down location, the second step path comprising a third swing height representing a maximum height above the ground for the second foot to travel along the second step path;

determining, using the topographical information, a second obstacle height exceeds the third swing height, the second obstacle height representative of a second obstacle in the second step path; and

in response to determining the second obstacle height exceeds the third swing height, adjusting the third swing height to a fourth swing height different than the second swing height, the fourth swing height having a second threshold height above the second obstacle height.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third swing height is the same as the first swing height.

12. A robotic device comprising:

a first leg having a first foot;

a second leg having a second foot; and

a control system comprising a processor and non-transitory computer readable medium, the non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

obtaining an environment map comprising topographical information;

determining a step path for the first foot of the robotic device, the step path extending from a lift off location to a touch-down location, the step path comprising a first swing height representing a maximum height above ground for the first foot to travel along the step path;

determining, using the topographical information, an obstacle height exceeds the first swing height, the obstacle height representative of an obstacle in the step path; and

in response to determining the obstacle height exceeds the first swing height, adjusting the first swing height to a second swing height, the second swing height having a threshold height above the obstacle height.

13. The robotic device of claim 12 , wherein the first swing height comprises a default swing height.

14. The robotic device of claim 13 , wherein the default swing height is based at least in part on a gait of the robotic device and a speed of the robotic device.

15. The robotic device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining, using the topographical information, a second obstacle height fails to exceed the first swing height; and

in response to determining that the second obstacle height fails to exceed the first swing height, maintaining the first swing height.

16. The robotic device of claim 12 , wherein the threshold height above the obstacle height comprises a clearance margin between the obstacle height and the second swing height.

17. The robotic device of claim 16 , wherein the clearance margin is based at least in part on a standard deviation of the determined obstacle height.

18. The robotic device of claim 12 , wherein determining the obstacle height comprises determining a high point of a portion of the topographical information, the portion of the topographical information along the step path.

19. The robotic device of claim 18 , wherein the high point is representative of a height of the obstacle.

20. The robotic device of claim 18 , wherein the high point is determined from a plurality of sample heights of the portion of the topographical information along the step path.

21. The robotic device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a second step path for the second foot of the robotic device, the second step path extending from a second lift off location to a second touch-down location, the second step path comprising a third swing height representing a maximum height above ground for the second foot to travel along the second step path;

determining, using the topographical information, a second obstacle height exceeds the third swing height, the second obstacle height representative of a second obstacle in the second step path; and

in response to determining the second obstacle height exceeds the third swing height, adjusting the third swing height to a fourth swing height different than the second swing height, the fourth swing height having a second threshold height above the second obstacle height.

22. The robotic device of claim 21 , wherein the third swing height is the same as the first swing height.
