Abstract

Described here are systems, devices, and methods for providing remote manipulation or traction to tissue using one or more graspers, delivery devices, and magnetic control assemblies. The graspers may be configured for insertion into the patient during a minimally-invasive procedure, such as a laparoscopic operation. The graspers may be configured to releasably connect to tissue. In some embodiments, the grasper may comprise a clip, a clamp, a suction device, a coil, or the like, and may be configured to connect to any suitable tissue. Delivery devices may be configured to releasably engage a grasper to deliver the grasper, remove it from the patient, or reposition it. The delivery devices may additionally be configured to actuate the grasper to attach it to tissue and/or detach it from tissue. The magnetic control elements may be configured to be positioned externally of the body to move, reposition, and/or hold the grasper.

Claims (21)

1. A system for manipulating tissue, comprising:

a grasper comprising two arms configured to be attached to tissue in a body of a patient, wherein the two arms are connected via a linkage assembly comprising at least one pivot joint, wherein the linkage assembly is connected to a coupling element, and wherein the two arms can be moved from a closed configuration to an open configuration by releasably engaging an actuation rod with the coupling element via a magnetic force and proximally retracting the actuation rod;

a delivery device comprising the actuation rod, the delivery device configured to releasably engage the grasper and to actuate the grasper between the closed configuration and the open configuration; and

a magnetic control assembly comprising a magnet configured to generate a magnetic field and to apply a magnetic force to the grasper.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the grasper comprises a magnetic or ferromagnetic material.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the two arms are configured to attach to tissue by holding the tissue between the two arms.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the two arms are connected via the linkage assembly having an expanded configuration and a collapsed configuration and comprising a plurality of struts.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the two arms can be moved from the open configuration to the closed configuration by moving the linkage assembly from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pivot joint comprises a first pivot joint and a second pivot joint.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the linkage assembly comprises one or more straight strut and one or more bent strut.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coupling element comprises a distal end connected to the linkage assembly and a proximal end configured to be releasably engaged by the actuation rod.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the coupling element comprises magnetic material.

10. A system for manipulating tissue, comprising:

a grasper comprising two arms configured to be attached to tissue in a body of a patient, wherein the two arms are connected via a first pivot joint of a linkage assembly, wherein the linkage assembly is connected to a coupling element via a second pivot joint of the linkage assembly, and wherein the two arms can be moved from a closed configuration to an open configuration by moving the linkage assembly from an expanded configuration to a collapsed configuration;

a delivery device comprising an outer sheath defining a lumen, the delivery device configured to releasably engage the grasper and to actuate the grasper between the closed configuration and the open configuration; and

a magnetic control assembly comprising a magnet configured to generate a magnetic field and to apply a magnetic force to the grasper.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the outer sheath comprises a distal lip with a tapered shape.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the outer sheath comprises a distal lip with a funnel shape.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein a diameter of the outer sheath decreases from a distal end to a proximal end of the delivery device.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the grasper is configured to actuate between the closed configuration and the open configuration by translating the linkage assembly through the lumen.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the delivery device comprises an actuation rod.
