Abstract

A tissue removal device including customizable tips and method of use thereof. The tissue removal device may include an outer shaft having a removable tip attached to the outer shaft and a rotatable inner shaft extending through the outer shaft and having a rotatable cutting portion extending from the inner shaft. Disc material may be cut and removed from a surgical area using an auger-like and/or suction mechanism to facilitate the transfer of removed tissue away from the surgical area.

Claims (35)

1. A surgical vertebral disc removal device comprising:

a handle;

an outer shaft having an opening at its distal portion;

a cutter disposed near the opening and adapted to cut the vertebral disc;

an irrigation channel running along the outer shaft and having a distal end adapted to provide irrigation fluid to the opening;

a collection chamber attached to the handle and in fluid communication with the outer shaft to receive the cut disc through the outer shaft from the opening; and

a tip disposed distally of the outer shaft and defining the opening, the tip including a curette in the form of a lip radially extending outward around an entire circumference of the tip.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cutter is configured to rotate to cut a portion of the vertebral disc at a surgical site.

3. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a suction source adapted to couple to the outer shaft to transport the cut disc from the opening to the collection chamber.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a diffuser positioned at the distal end of the irrigation channel to prevent clogging.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a rotatable inner shaft extending through the outer shaft and having the cutter extending from the inner shaft, wherein the inner shaft is configured to convey the cut disc from the surgical site through a space between the outer shaft and the inner shaft.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein:

a portion of the inner shaft is angled; and

the inner shaft includes a spring region in the form or a relief or spiral cut to angle the inner shaft.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein at least a portion of the inner shaft is threaded to enhance transportation of the cut disc in an auger-like manner through the outer shaft and into the collection chamber.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a tip disposed distally of the outer shaft and defining the opening, the tip including a plurality of teeth configured to provide a scissor-like effect when the cutter rotates against the plurality of teeth.

9. A surgical vertebral disc removal device comprising:

an elongate outer shaft having a channel extending therethrough;

an opening disposed near the distal end of the outer shaft;

an inner shaft extending through the outer shaft; and

a cutter disposed near the opening and extending from the inner shaft that is configured to remove the vertebral disc from a surgical site when rotated;

an irrigation channel running along the outer shaft and having a distal end adapted to provide irrigation fluid to the opening; and

a tip disposed distally of the outer shaft and defining the opening, wherein the tip includes a curette in the form of a lip radially extending outward around an entire circumference of the tip,

wherein the tissue removal device is configured to convey the cut disc through the outer shaft.

10. The device of claim 9 , further comprising:

a collection chamber in fluid communication with the channel of the outer shaft;

a suction source adapted to couple to the outer shaft to transport the cut disc from the opening to the collection chamber.

11. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a diffuser positioned at the distal end of the irrigation channel to prevent clogging.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein:

a portion of the inner shaft is angled; and

the inner shaft includes a spring region in the form or a relief or spiral cut to angle the inner shaft.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein a base of the cutter is offset relative to an outer diameter of the outer shaft to allow an enlarged gap between the cutter and the outer shaft.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the enlarged gap creates a non-coaxial exit path for the cutter.

15. The device of claim 9 , wherein the tip includes a blunt distal end and an open window in the distal end.

16. The device of claim 9 , wherein the tip includes a plurality of teeth configured to provide a scissor-like effect when the cutter rotates against the plurality of teeth.
