Abstract

In general, the disclosure describes techniques for evaluating application quality of experience metrics over a software-defined wide area network. For instance, a network device may receive an application data packet of a data flow for an application. In response to receiving the application data packet, the network device may assign the data flow to a first link of a plurality of links and initiate a probing process for the data flow on the first link to determine one or more quality of experience (QoE) metrics for the first link. The network device may, at a later time, detect that the data flow is no longer being received. In response to detecting that the data flow is no longer being received, the network device may cease the probing process for the data flow on the first link.

1. A method comprising:

assigning, by a network device, a data flow to a first queue of a plurality of queues associated with a first network link for sending data packets of the data flow from the first queue onto the first network link;

determining, by the network device, an application signature of an application data packet of the data flow;

determining, by the network device and based on the application signature and the probing, that the QoE metrics do not satisfy an SLA metric for the application matching the application signature;

re-assigning, by the network device and based on the determination that the QoE metrics do not satisfy the SLA metric, the data flow from the first queue to a different, second queue for sending subsequent data packets of the data flow from the second queue onto a second network link;

sending, by the network device and based on the re-assignment, one or more probe packets over the second network link via the second queue to determine one or more QoE metrics for the second network link as measured via the second queue, the one or more probe packets configured according to a probe packet configuration; and

refraining, by the network device and based on the re-assigning, from sending additional probe packets that are configured according to the probe packet configuration over the first network link via the first queue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, upon refraining from sending additional probe packets via the first queue, the second queue is the only queue over which probe packets are currently being sent.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each probe packet of the one or more probe packets has a unique default configuration.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more probe packets comprises a plurality of synthetic probe packets.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the network device and based on the application signature, the probe packet configuration for the data flow.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the application signature of the application data packet comprises:

performing, by the network device, deep packet inspection on the application data packet.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data flow comprises application data traffic for a first application, and wherein re-assigning the data flow comprises re-assigning the data flow in response to determining that: (1) one or more quality of experience metrics for the first queue associated with the first network link fail to satisfy a service level agreement for the first application, and (2) the one or more quality of experience metrics for the second queue associated with the second network link satisfy the service level agreement for the first application.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network device comprises a software-defined Wide Area Network (WAN) device, wherein the first network link comprises a first WAN link, and wherein the second network link comprises a second WAN link.

9. A network device comprising:

a memory; and

one or more processors in communication with the memory, the one or more processors configured to:

assign a data flow to a first queue of a plurality of queues associated with a first network link;

initiate probing of the first network link via the first queue in response to the assigning to determine one or more Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics for the first queue of the first network link;

determine an application signature of an application data packet of the data flow;

determine, based on the application signature and the probing, that the QoE metrics do not satisfy an SLA metric for the application matching the application signature;

re-assign, based on the determination that the QoE metrics do not satisfy the SLA metric, the data flow from the first queue to a different, second queue for sending subsequent data packets of the data flow from the second queue onto a second network link;

send, based on the re-assignment, one or more probe packets over the second network link via the second queue to determine one or more QoE metrics for the second network link as measured via the second queue, the one or more probe packets configured according to a probe packet configuration; and

refrain, based on the re-assigning, from sending additional probe packets that are configured according to the probe packet configuration over the first network link via the first queue.

10. The network device of claim 9 , wherein, upon the one or more processors having refrained from sending additional probe packets via the first queue, the second queue is the only queue over which probe packets are currently being sent.

11. The network device of claim 9 , wherein each probe packet of the one or more probe packets has a unique default configuration.

12. The network device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more probe packets comprises a plurality of synthetic probe packets.

13. The network device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine, based on the application signature, the probe packet configuration for the data flow.

14. The network device of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors being configured to determine the application signature of the application data packet comprises the one or more processors being configured to perform deep packet inspection on the application data packet.

15. The network device of claim 9 , wherein the data flow comprises application data traffic for a first application, and wherein the one or more processors being configured to re-assign the data flow comprises the one or more processors being configured to re-assign the data flow in response to a determination that: (1) one or more quality of experience metrics for the first queue associated with the first network link fail to satisfy a service level agreement for the first application, and (2) the one or more quality of experience metrics for the second queue associated with the second network link satisfy the service level agreement for the first application.
