Abstract

A system and method for perturbing a permanent magnet asymmetric field to move a body includes a rotating body configured to rotate about a rotation axis, a permanent magnet arrangement arranged on the rotating body containing two or more permanent magnets, and a perturbation element. The permanent magnet arrangement is configured such that an asymmetric magnetic field is generated by the permanent magnets about a perturbation point. Actuation of the perturbation element at or near the perturbation point causes a tangential magnetic force on the rotating body and/or the permanent magnet arrangement, thereby causing the rotating body to rotate about the rotation axis. The disclosure may also be used for linear motion of a body.

Claims (35)

1. A system for rotating a first shaft connected to a rotating body, the first shaft and rotating body configured to rotate about a rotation axis, comprising:

at least one permanent magnet asymmetric field device disposed on the rotating body a predetermined distance from the rotation axis, the device comprising:

a permanent magnet arrangement having at least three permanent magnets; and

a perturbation element having one end disposed in the magnetic arrangement and having an opposite end which extends outside of the arrangement and outside of the device;

wherein the at least three permanent magnets are configured such that an asymmetric magnetic field is generated by the permanent magnets about a perturbation point, wherein two of the three permanent magnets are polarized in a first direction and one of the three permanent magnets is polarized in a second direction, the first direction being perpendicular to the second direction, and wherein actuation of the perturbation element at or near the perturbation point with an input force causes the perturbation element to interact with the asymmetric magnetic field which causes a tangential magnetic output force on the device, thereby causing the rotating body to rotate about the rotation axis and causing the first shaft to rotate; and

a second shaft configured to rotate about the rotation axis, having at least one radial actuation arm that rotates with the second shaft such that when the second shaft rotates, the radial actuation arm actuates the perturbation element thereby causing rotation of the rotating body and the first shaft.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the perturbation element comprises at least one of: a ferrous material and a magnet.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the ferrous material comprises iron.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the magnet comprises a conical magnet.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the permanent magnet polarized in the second direction is radially aligned with the perturbation point, and wherein the two permanent magnets polarized in the first direction are not radially aligned with the perturbation point.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the permanent magnet polarized in the second direction comprises a cylindrical bias magnet and the magnets polarized in the first direction comprise rectangular wall magnets.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the asymmetric magnetic field comprises a major field and a minor field, and wherein the major field is larger than the minor field and/or the major field has greater magnetic field strength than the minor field.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein actuation of the perturbation element at or near the perturbation point causes the perturbation element to deviate from a perturbation axis, and wherein the perturbation axis is substantially parallel to the rotation axis.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein actuation of the perturbation element actuates the perturbation element from an initial position where a longitudinal extension of the perturbation element is substantially perpendicular to a surface of the rotating body at the perturbation point.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of permanent magnetic asymmetric field devices radially disposed on the rotating body.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second shaft has a plurality of radial actuation arms, each of the actuation arms actuating a respective perturbation element associated with a corresponding one of the permanent magnetic asymmetric field devices.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rotating body is a rotating plate or a rotating flywheel.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first shaft drives an electrical generator and generates electricity when the first shaft rotates.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second shaft is connected to an actuation input device.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the rotating body performs work, the work comprising at least one of: generating electricity, propelling an automobile, and driving a propeller of a boat or airplane.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the perturbation element is configured to be inserted into the permanent magnet arrangement or the rotating body.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein two of the three permanent magnets are polarized in a radial direction perpendicular to the rotation axis and one of the three permanent magnets is polarized in an axial direction parallel to the rotation axis.

18. A system for rotating a body to perform work, the rotating body configured to rotate about a rotation axis, comprising:

at least one permanent magnet asymmetric field device disposed on the rotating body a predetermined distance from the rotation axis, the device comprising:

a permanent magnet arrangement having at least three permanent magnets; and

a perturbation element having one end disposed in the magnetic arrangement and having an opposite end which extends outside of the arrangement and outside of the device;

an actuation input device configured to actuate the perturbation element thereby causing rotation of the rotating body.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the work performed by the rotating body comprises at least one of: generating electricity, propelling an automobile, and driving a propeller of a boat or airplane.
