Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising an end effector including a first jaw and a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw is disclosed. One or both of the first jaw and the second jaw comprise alignment features.

Claims (60)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

a first jaw, comprising:

a first proximal end;

a first distal end;

a first lateral wall; and

a second lateral wall positioned opposite said first lateral wall; and

a second jaw rotatably connected to said first jaw about a rotation joint, wherein said second jaw is rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position, a partially-clamped position, and a fully-clamped position, and wherein said second jaw comprises:

a second proximal end;

a second distal end;

a first lateral flange, wherein said first lateral flange is not in contact with said first lateral wall when said second jaw is in said open position, and wherein said first lateral flange is in contact with said first lateral wall when said second jaw is in said partially-clamped position and when said second jaw is in said fully-clamped position; and

a second lateral flange positioned opposite said first lateral flange, wherein said second lateral flange is not in contact with said second lateral wall when said second jaw is in said open position, and wherein said second lateral flange is in contact with said second lateral wall when said second jaw is in said partially-clamped position and when said second jaw is in said fully-clamped position to align said second jaw relative to said first jaw.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a replaceable staple cartridge.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw defines a first center plane, wherein said first lateral wall comprises a first outer surface angled inwardly toward said first center plane, and wherein said second lateral wall comprises a second outer wall angled inwardly toward said first center plane.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a second lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw.

5. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

a first jaw, comprising:

a first proximal end;

a first distal end;

a first lateral wall; and

a second lateral wall positioned opposite said first lateral wall; and

a second jaw rotatably connected to said first jaw about a rotation joint, wherein said second jaw is rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position, a partially-clamped position, and a fully-clamped position during a closing motion, and wherein said second jaw comprises:

a second proximal end;

a second distal end;

a first lateral flange, wherein said first lateral flange is not in contact with said first lateral wall when said second jaw is in said open position, and wherein said first lateral flange is configured to contact said first lateral wall once said second jaw is in said partially-clamped position during said closing motion; and

a second lateral flange positioned opposite said first lateral flange, wherein said second lateral flange is not in contact with said second lateral wall when said second jaw is in said open position, wherein said second lateral flange is configured to contact said second lateral wall once said second jaw is in said partially-clamped position during said closing motion, and wherein said contact between said first lateral flange and said second lateral flange and said first jaw creates an interference force that increases as said second jaw is moved from said partially-clamped position to said fully-clamped position.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , further comprising a replaceable staple cartridge.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said first jaw defines a first center plane, wherein said first lateral wall comprises a first outer surface angled inwardly toward said first center plane, and wherein said second lateral wall comprises a second outer wall angled inwardly toward said first center plane.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , further comprising:

a first lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a second lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw.

9. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

a replaceable staple cartridge;

a first jaw, comprising:

a first proximal end;

a gradually sloping surface; and

a first distal end; and

a second jaw rotatably connected to said first jaw about a rotation joint, wherein said second jaw is rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position, a partially-clamped position, and a fully-clamped position during a closing motion, and wherein said second jaw comprises:

a second jaw shape that differs from a shape of said first jaw;

a second proximal end;

a second distal end; and

a lateral flange, wherein said lateral flange is not in contact with said first jaw when said second jaw is in said open position, and wherein said lateral flange is configured to contact said gradually sloping surface of said first jaw once said second jaw is in said partially-clamped position during said closing motion, and wherein said contact between said lateral flange and said gradually sloping surface of said first jaw creates an interference force that increases as said second jaw is moved from said partially-clamped position to said fully-clamped position.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , further comprising:

a first lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a second lateral spring positioned intermediate said first jaw and said second jaw.

11. An end effector for a surgical stapler, wherein said end effector comprises:

a channel comprising a pair of channel sidewalls configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therebetween; and

an anvil supported relative to said channel for selective rotation relative to said channel between a fully-open position and a fully-clamped position, wherein said anvil comprises a pair of anvil tissue stops, wherein each said anvil tissue stop comprises a tissue stop distal edge located distal to a proximal-most staple cavity in the surgical staple cartridge operably supported between said channel sidewalls, and wherein each said anvil tissue stop is configured to slidably engage a gradually sloping surface on a corresponding one of said channel sidewalls to create an increasing resistive force during movement of said anvil from said fully-open position to said fully-clamped position.

12. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein each said gradually sloping surface is formed on an outer surface of a corresponding one of said channel sidewalls.

13. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein said outer surface of each said channel sidewall comprises:

a top angled surface;

a second angled surface; and

a final angled surface.

14. The end effector of claim 13 , wherein a first distance between said top angled surfaces on said channel sidewalls defines a top width, wherein a second distance between said second angled surfaces on said channel sidewalls defines an intermediate width that is greater than the top width, and wherein a third distance between said final angled surfaces on said channel sidewalls defines a third width that is greater than the intermediate width.

15. The end effector of claim 13 , wherein the resistive force increases as said anvil tissue stops move from slidably contacting said top angled surfaces to slidably contacting said second angled surfaces.

16. The end effector of claim 15 , wherein the resistive force increases as said anvil tissue stops move from slidably contacting said second angled surfaces to slidably contacting said final angled surfaces.
