Abstract

Provided are a refrigerator and a control method thereof. The refrigerator is characterized by enabling at least a part of a refrigerator door to be selectively transparent by a user's operation, such that the user sees through an inside of the refrigerator while the refrigerator door is closed.

Claims (60)

1. A home appliance, comprising:

a cabinet forming an inner space;

a light disposed within the inner space;

a door hinged to the cabinet to cover the inner space, and including:

a door frame having an opening; and

a front panel to cover the opening of the door frame and having a see-through area including a color or a mirror surface;

a sensor configured to detect a knock signal on the front panel;

a printed circuit board (PCB) coupled to the sensor; and

a controller configured to control the light,

wherein the light is turned on based on the knock signal while the door is closed to allow the inner space to be seen through the see-through area from outside of the home appliance, and

wherein the PCB is more adjacent to the sensor than the controller.

2. The home appliance of claim 1 , wherein the door further includes a rear panel spaced apart from a rear surface of the front panel, and a spacer provided between the front panel and the rear panel, and wherein the sensor faces the rear surface of the front panel and configured to detect the user input applied to the front panel.

3. The home appliance of claim 2 , wherein the front panel further includes a bezel area provided outside the see-through area, and the sensor is provided at the bezel area.

4. The home appliance of claim 3 , wherein the PCB is provided at the bezel area.

5. The home appliance of claim 4 , wherein the knock signal is input when a second knock is applied within a first predetermined time period after a first knock is applied on the front panel, and then the light is turned on.

6. The home appliance of claim 4 , wherein the controller is provided in the cabinet.

7. The home appliance of claim 6 , wherein the light is turned off after being turned on for a predetermined period of time.

8. The home appliance of claim 7 , wherein when the knock input is applied before the predetermined period of time has elapsed, the controller is configured to control the light to be turned off.

9. The home appliance of claim 4 , wherein the controller is provided in the cabinet.

10. The home appliance of claim 3 , wherein the sensor is provided closer to a boundary between the see-through area and the bezel area than an outer edge of the front panel.

11. The home appliance of claim 1 , wherein the door frame comprises a lower cap decoration having an injection port through which a foaming solution is injected to form an insulator in the door, and

wherein the sensor and the PCB are installed in the lower cap decoration.

12. The home appliance of claim 1 , wherein the front panel comprises a glass layer which forms an exterior, and a vacuum deposition layer formed at a rear surface of the glass layer,

wherein the vacuum deposition layer defines the mirror surface.

13. The home appliance of claim 12 , wherein the front panel comprises a bezel print layer formed at a rear surface of the vacuum deposition layer.

14. The home appliance of claim 1 , wherein the front panel comprises a glass layer which forms an exterior, a ceramic print layer formed at a front surface of the glass layer, and a bezel print layer formed at a rear surface of the glass layer.

15. The home appliance of claim 1 , wherein the front panel comprises a glass layer which forms an exterior, a hard coating layer formed at a front surface of the glass layer, and a bezel print layer formed at a rear surface of the glass layer.

16. A home appliance, comprising:

a cabinet forming an inner space;

a light disposed within the inner space;

a door hinged to the cabinet to cover the inner space, the door including:

a door frame having an opening; and

a front panel configured to cover the opening and having a see-through area having a color or a mirror surface;

a first sensor configured to detect a user input on the front panel;

a second sensor configured to emit light, detect a reflection of the emitted light, and to detect a user's position based on the reflection;

a printed circuit board (PCB) coupled to the second sensor;

a controller configured to control the light;

wherein the light is turned on based on the user's position and the user input while the door is closed to allow the inner space to be seen through the see-through area from outside of the home appliance, and

wherein the PCB is more adjacent to the second sensor than the controller.

17. The home appliance of claim 16 , wherein the first sensor and the second sensor are provided in the door frame.

18. The home appliance of claim 17 , wherein the door frame comprises a lower cap decoration having an injection port through which a foaming solution is injected to form an insulator in the door, and

wherein the first sensor and the second sensor are installed in the lower cap decoration.

19. The home appliance of claim 17 , wherein the PCB is provided in the door frame.

20. The home appliance of claim 16 , wherein the door further includes a rear panel spaced apart from a rear surface of the front panel, and a spacer provided between the front panel and the rear panel, and

wherein the first sensor and the second sensor face the rear surface the front panel.

21. The home appliance of claim 20 , wherein the front panel further includes a bezel area provided outside the see-through area, and

wherein the first sensor and the second sensor are provided at the bezel area.

22. A home appliance, comprising:

a cabinet forming an inner space;

a light disposed within the inner space;

a door hinged to the cabinet to cover the inner space, the door including

a door frame having an opening; and

a front panel configured to cover the opening and having a see-through area including a color or a mirror surface;

a first sensor configured to detect a user input on the front panel; and

a second sensor configured to detect a user's position;

wherein the light is turned on based on a valid knock signal while the door is closed to allow the inner space to be seen through the see-through area from outside of the home appliance.

23. The home appliance of claim 22 , wherein the valid knock signal is input when a second knock is applied within a first predetermined time period after a first knock is applied on the front panel.

24. The home appliance of claim 22 , wherein the light is turned off after being turned on for a predetermined period of time.

25. The home appliance of claim 24 , wherein if it is determined that the valid knock input is applied before the predetermined period of time has elapsed, the light is turned off.

26. The home appliance of claim 22 , wherein while the door is opened, the second sensor and the first sensor are inactivated.
