Abstract

A golf tracking system including a tag coupled to a golf club. The tag includes a plurality of sensors, each which output a signal based on a detected movement of the golf club, a microcontroller that compares each of the plurality of sensor outputs to stored reference sensor output values, and a transceiver that transmits data corresponding to the sensor outputs to a device remote from the tag based on the comparison performed by the microcontroller. The location-aware device then processes the information received from the tag to determine whether a shot should be registered.

Claims (30)

1. A tag coupled to a golf club and comprising:

a plurality of sensors, each configured to output a signal based on a detected movement of the golf club;

a microcontroller configured to compare each of the plurality of sensor outputs to stored reference sensor output values; and,

a transceiver configured to transmit data corresponding to the sensor outputs to a device remote from the tag based on the comparison performed by the microcontroller; and

wherein the tag includes a hollow cavity in a base of the tag mounted on a golf grip of the golf club;

wherein the tag allows for a pressure wave generated by a ball strike to be conducted to the sensors on the tag; and

wherein the sensors output sensor data generated from the pressure wave to the microcontroller and a plurality of associated algorithms to classify a ball strike.

2. A tag of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of algorithms associated with the microcontroller and/or a firmware are adaptive learning algorithms that learn to continuously improve a probability of recognizing a ball strike across a plurality of golf swings.

3. A tag of claim 1 , wherein said transceiver communicates with a a radiofrequency (RF) transceiver for accessing battery life data, current position data, club swing data, and records indicative of past performance of a golfer.

4. A tag of claim 3 wherein said radiofrequency (RF) transceiver accesses said records of a golfer and wherein said golfer records are stored in an updateable memory.

5. A golf club monitoring system including a tag coupled to a golf club comprising:

a plurality of sensors, each configured to output a signal based on a detected movement of the golf club;

a microcontroller configured to compare each of the plurality of sensor outputs to stored reference sensor output values; and,

a transceiver configured to transmit data corresponding to the sensor outputs to a device remote from the tag based on the comparison performed by the microcontroller; and

wherein the tag includes a hollow cavity in a base of the tag mounted on a golf grip of the golf club;

wherein the tag allows for a pressure wave generated by a ball strike to be conducted to the sensors on the tag; and

wherein the sensors output sensor data generated from the pressure wave to the microcontroller and a plurality of associated algorithms to classify a ball strike.

6. A golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of algorithms associated with the microcontroller and/or a firmware are adaptive learning algorithms that learn to continuously improve a probability of recognizing a ball strike across a plurality of golf swings.

7. A golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 5 , wherein said transceiver communicates with a radiofrequency (RF) transceiver for accessing battery life data, current position data, club swing data, and records indicative of past performance of a golfer.

8. A golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 7 wherein said radiofrequency (RF) transceiver accesses said records of a golfer and wherein said golfer records are stored in an updateable memory.

9. A method for monitoring golfer performance by use of a golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 7 wherein said radiofrequency (RF) transceiver accesses said records of a golfer and wherein said golfer records are stored in an updateable memory.

10. A method for monitoring golfer performance by use of a golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of algorithms associated with the microcontroller and/or a firmware are adaptive learning algorithms that learn to continuously improve a probability of recognizing a ball strike across a plurality of golf swings.

11. A method for monitoring golfer performance by use of a golf club monitoring system including a tag of claim 5 , wherein said transceiver communicates with a radiofrequency (RF) transceiver for accessing battery life data, current position data, club swing data, and records indicative of past performance of a golfer.

12. A method for monitoring golfer performance by use of golf club monitoring system including a tag coupled to a golf club, the method comprising:

sensing acceleration, location, shot data, and other golf swing data via a plurality of sensors, each configured to output a signal based on a detected movement of the golf club;

analyzing the acceleration, location, shot data, and other golf swing data via a microcontroller configured to compare each of the plurality of sensor outputs to stored reference sensor output values; and,
