Abstract

The present invention is a cuvette assembly for use in optically measuring at least one characteristic of particles within a plurality of liquid samples. The cuvette assembly comprises a main body having internal walls and external walls, and a plurality of cuvettes within the main body at least partially being defined by the internal walls. Each of the plurality of cuvettes has a liquid-input chamber for receiving a respective one of the plurality of liquid samples, a filter, and an optical chamber for receiving a respective filtered liquid sample caused by passing the respective one of the plurality of liquid samples through the filter. Each of the optical chambers includes an entry window for allowing transmission of an input light beam through the filtered liquid sample and an exit window for transmitting a forward scatter signal caused by the particles within the filtered liquid sample.

Claims (25)

1. A cuvette assembly for use in optically measuring at least one characteristic of pathogen within a plurality of liquid samples, comprising:

a main body having a plurality of optical chambers aligned along a straight line and a plurality of internal walls that separate the plurality of optical chambers, each optical chamber for testing one of the plurality of liquid samples, each optical chamber having an entry window for allowing transmission of an input light beam through the respective liquid sample and an exit window for transmitting a signal caused by the particles within the respective liquid sample, wherein the area of the exit window is larger than the area of the entry window and the cross-sectional area of each optical chamber increases between the entry window and the exit window; and

a plurality of different agents associated with different ones of the plurality of optical chambers, the plurality of different agents for interacting with and having an effect upon the pathogen within the plurality of liquid samples.

The assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of individual closure mechanisms, each of the plurality of closure mechanisms being associated with a respective one of a plurality of openings in fluidic communication with the plurality of optical chambers, each of the plurality of closure mechanisms being movable from an initial opened position for receiving the liquid sample to a closed position that inhibits leakage from the associated liquid-input chamber.

3. The assembly of claim 2 , further including a frangible membrane below the closure mechanism that retains a preloaded agent within the cuvette.

4. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein the preloaded agent includes one of a lyophilized material, a coating, a liquid or solution, or a gaseous atmosphere.

5. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein the preloaded agent is an antibiotic.

6. The assembly of claim 3 , wherein the preloaded agent is a growth media.

7. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein one of the optical chambers is a control sample without a preloaded chemo-effector.

8. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of liquid samples in the respective optical chambers are associated with a single person.

9. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the input window and output window are positioned at different angles from a vertical plane relative to each other.

10. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different agents is different antibiotics and the pathogen is a bacteria.

11. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different agents is the same antibiotic at different concentrations and the pathogen is a bacteria.

12. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the exit window is angled relative to a central axis of the input light beam by an angle.

13. The assembly of claim 12 , wherein the angle can range from about 2° degrees to about 15°.

A cuvette assembly for use in optically measuring at least one characteristic of pathogen within a plurality of liquid samples, comprising: a main body having a plurality of openings aligned along a straight line for receiving a respective one of the plurality of liquid samples, each of the plurality of openings providing access to a corresponding one of a plurality of optical chambers, the main body having a plurality of internal walls that separate the plurality of optical chambers, each optical chamber having an entry window and an exit window, the exit window being larger than the entry window; and a plurality of individual closure mechanisms, each of the plurality of closure mechanisms being associated with a respective one of the plurality of openings, each of the plurality of closure mechanisms are movable from an initial opened position for receiving the respective liquid sample to a closed position that inhibits leakage.

15. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the closure mechanisms are slidable from the initial opened position to the closed position.

16. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the closure mechanisms include a pivoting device to move the closure mechanisms from the initial opened position to the closed position.

17. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the closure mechanisms each plug a respective one of the openings.

18. The assembly of claim 14 , further including a plurality of individual registrations features located on the exterior of the main body.

19. The assembly of claim 14 , further including a frangible membrane below the closure mechanisms to retain a preloaded agent within the cuvette.

20. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of liquid samples in the respective optical chambers are associated with a single person.

21. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the input window and output window are positioned at different angles from a vertical plane relative to each other.

22. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the exit window is angled relative to a central axis of an input light beam by an angle.

23. The assembly of claim 22 , wherein the angle can range from about 2° degrees to about 15°.
